Women's Lacrosse Produces Late Run to Defeat Rams

NEWTON, MA— In a regional women’s lacrosse game that featured six lead changes and five ties, the Lasell College Lasers prevailed, 19-12, in non-conference action over Framingham State College on Tuesday afternoon at Grellier Field.  Lasell improved to 7-4 overall while the Rams suffered their first defeat of the season and left with a 2-1 slate.

Lasell started the scoring 1:51 into the game when the Lasers took possession of the ball after a Framingham offside call.  Freshman Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA) ran full field to put the Lasers on top 1-0.  Fellow first year Rebecca Stanton (Agawam, MA) crossed in front of the Ram’s crease one minute later to boost the Lasers edge, and junior Tina Canavan (Stonington, CT) added to the 3-0 run at 21:24.

Framingham got on the board at the 20 minute mark when Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, MA) gained possession off a caused turnover and sprinted into the Lasers defensive zone to score.  Canavan connected on a free possession shot at 17:58, taking three steps into a side arm shot, after which point Framingham went on a four-goal run to tie the score and then take the lead.

Ashley Noonan (Mansfield, MA) tallied back-to-back goals to start the run and Stephanie Corrales (Framingham, MA) knotted the score when she reversed into a left-handed shot.  Chelsea Temple (Rutland, VT) gave the Rams their first lead, scoring on a penalty shot.

Canavan came back to tie the score again at five-all receiving a high lob pass from Andrea Ward (Hingham, MA), who was behind the Rams cage, and releasing in the shot while still in the air to score.  Niela Kudla (Groton, MA) and Chelsea Caren (Redding, CT) each scored before the half, giving the hosts a 7-5 lead at the break.

After the intermission, Slattery gave Lasell a three goal advantage, dodging through the middle for her second point of the day. Framingham responded with a 4-0 run, to transfer the lead once again.  Goals by Stanton and Ward returned the score to Lasell’s favor, 11-10, and the Lasers never looked back. The home team went on an 8-2 stretch to defeat the visiting Rams, 19-12.

Lasell won the battle in draw controls (21-12), shots (42-35), and ground balls (42-32), while both teams capitalized on 2-of-7 free-possession shots.

Canavan was the top performer on offense with eight points, scoring seven goals and adding an assist, while also adding seven ground balls and seven draw controls. Slattery and Ward each finished with four points and Stanton and Kudla each produced three points.

For the Rams, Noonan dropped in six points, all on goals, along with four ground balls.  Corrales chipped in with two goals, one assist, and five ground balls and Kiley scored twice and caused four turnovers.

Lasell’s Kristin Coderre (Monson, MA) picked up the win, making 14 saves along the way.   Framingham’s Kelsey Turner (Billerica, MA) suffered the loss, stopping 11 Laser shots in the defeat.

Lasell’s next contest will be a Great Northeast Athletic Conference showdown with St. Joseph’s College of Maine on Friday, April 9th at 4:00 p.m.
