BOSTON, MA – Emerson College handed the Lasell College women’s Lacrosse team their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss this season, 18-11, on Wednesday afternoon at Emerson’s Rotch Field. The Lions broke up a three-game win streak for the Lasers, who ended the day with a 6-4 overall and a 3-1 league slate.
Emerson's Meg Ross (Bellingham, Mass.) and Laura Miley (Cranston, R.I.) combined for 13 goals and five assists to lead the Lions to their second conference triumph. Ross recorded ten total points and Miley picked up the additional eight. Katie Dodge (West Newbury, MA) contributed four more points, and Amy Gervis (Randolph, NJ) and Monica Carroll (Reading, MA) supplied a goal apiece.
Lasell was led by two-time GNAC Rookie of the Week Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA) who tallied five goals and picked up three draw controls. Junior midfielder Tina Canavan (Stonington, CT) chipped in with three points, scoring two goals and collecting one assist. Neila Kudla (Groton, MA), Chelsea Caren (Redding, CT), Andrea Ward (Hingham, MA), and Karynne Cabral (Brookfield, CT) also notched a goal each for the Lasers.
The Lions took an early lead as Ross drilled home a free position shot only 34 seconds into the game. Lasell responded quickly and repeatedly, scoring the game's next four goals with Slattery donning two of the early tallies.
Ross' second tally of the game started a six-goal Emerson run for a 7-4 lead by the 12 minute mark. Three of the goals came off Miley's stick. Two more markers by Slattery brought the Lasers to within one, 7-6. A goal by Miley stopped the brief run before Canavan pulled Lasell back to within a goal, at 8-7. Goals by Ross and Miley closed the half with a 10-7 Lion lead.
Emerson dominated the early part of the second half running off six straight goals to put the game out of reach.
The Lions dominated the statistics in the game outshooting Lasell by 40-20. Emerson also had a 24-16 edge in turnovers.
Lasell’s goalkeeping duo of Kristin Coderre (Monson, Mass.) and Lindsey Cahoon (Falmouth, MA) finished the game with 15 stops splitting time in the Lasers’ net. Coderre made six stops and Cahoon turned away nine attempts. Emily Saeger (Center Valley, Pa.) had a pair off stops for the Lions.
Lasell is idle until April 6th, when the Lasers will host Framingham State in a non-conference tilt at 4:00pm.
