Stanton Leads Lasers to Second Straight Win

NEWTON, MA- Freshman midfielder Rebecca Stanton (Agawam, MA) scored seven goals and added two assists for nine total points, leading the Lasell College women’s lacrosse team as they captured their second straight win with a 21-7 victory over Daniel Webster College on Thursday afternoon at Grellier Field.  The Lasers evened out their overall record to 2-2, while Eagles drop to 0-1 after their first game of the season.

The Lasers took control from the opening draw as Stanton grabbed one of her game-high six possessions in the first attempt.  Within three minutes the Lasers had scored, as Amanda Martin (Lowell, MA) sent the ball in from the wing to a curling Andrea Ward (Hingham, MA) at 27:41.  Twenty seconds later Tina Canavan (Stonington, CT) cut through the eight meter arc shooting the ball high to the right corner for Lasell’s second goal.

Daniel Webster’s Natalie Bates (N. Kingston, RI) controlled the draw in the ensuing possession, taking off down field to score off the draw, at 27:10.

Lasell however, scored the next four goals, beginning with two goals by Stanton.  Her first connection came on a free possession shot bouncing the ball low into the net and her second was scored after she picked up a ground ball and quickly released it, bringing the score to 4-1. Canavan then scored twice, first grabbing control of the draw and tearing down field for the Lasers’ fifth goal, then connecting off a feed from Stanton for the sixth goal.

Bates curled around the net for the Eagles second tally of the day in the 22nd minute and Stephanie Zeman (Jefferson Township, NJ) made a spin move around Lasell’s defense for their third goal at 19:21.

Before the halftime horn sounded, Martin, Stanton, Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA) and April McGrath (Willow Grove, PA) each notched additional marks for Lasell and Zeman and Samantha Cotoni (Groton, MA) tallied one each for Daniel Webster.

Ward began the second half by receiving a leading pass from Canavan and dumping the shot into the Eagles net. Canavan then tacked on two more goals for the Lasers and Stanton rocketed in a shot dished from Martin at the 12 meter arc, all within the first five minutes of the second period.

Slattery was awarded two consecutive free possession shots at the 21 minute mark and connected on the tail end of the pair, making the score 16-5.  Stanton tagged behind with her own penalty shot one minute later, followed by another goal that reflected off the post to enter the cage.

Bates interrupted Lasell’s flow with two marks for the Eagles, first running from midfield to get one past Lasell’s goalie for her third goal and then taking three steps and drilling an eight meter penalty shot for her fourth and final goal.

Niela Kudla (Groton, MA) would ultimately score the final two goals of the game, bouncing in her second and third season goals in for Lasell, making the score 21-7 at the final buzzer.

In addition to her four goals, Bates also picked up seven ground balls and finished with three draw controls.  Sarah Twardowski (Buffalo, NY) turned away six shots in the Eagles net.

Lasell’s freshman goaltender Lindsey Cahoon (Falmouth, MA) earned the win with eight saves in forty-five minutes in the net.  Canavan produced seven total points, scoring five times and adding two assists, and Ward, Slattery, and Martin each finished with three points.   Slattery and Stanton collected a game-high six draw controls each.

Lasell returns to action on Tuesday, March 16th, for a 4:00 game at Anna Maria College.
