WBB: Lasers Upend Vikings

Newton, MA - The Lasell Lasers Women's Basketball team defeated Salem State on Saturday by a final score of 64-51. The win moves the Lasers to 2-2 on the season, while the Vikings drop their first game of the season and are now 3-1.

After going back and forth early, the Vikings grabbed a 17-10 lead late in the first quarter. But a pair of made shots from the Lasers to close out the first quarter kept things within reach, trailing only by three headed into the second. It was in the second that the Lasers took control. After the two teams traded the lead back and forth, the Vikings grabbed a 23-22 lead, it was their last of the game. The Lasers would go on a 10-0 run to end the half, with four different players scoring in the run that spanned the last 3+ minutes of the half. This gave the Lasers a 32-23 lead at the break.

A quick 5-0 run from the Vikings cut the lead in half just two minutes into the second half, but a Blaize Mack three pointer was able to stop the vikings straight in their tracks. The teams would once agin go back and forth throughout the quarter, but the Lasers held the same nine point lead at the end of it. While the Vikings tried their hardest to make a run in the fourth, the Lasers always had an answer, and were able to win 64-51.

Four Lasers finished in double-digits for points, led by Kiara Cerruti's 16. Behind her was Shirle Major (13), Laura Johnson (12), and Blaize Mack (10). Johnson would lead the team with 13 rebounds, her fourth straight game with double digit rebounds, tying a school record. Cerruti had eight rebounds. Brooke Damboise led the team in assists, dishing out six.

Up next - The Lasers will embark on a five game road trip, beginning on Tuesday when they travel to UMass Boston for a 5pm game.
