WBK: Carroll's career high not enough as Farmington bests Lasell

Farmington, Maine – Senior Meg Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) scored a career high 26 points, but it was not enough as the Lasell University Lasers women's basketball team fell to the University of Maine at Farmington, 69-57, Saturday afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Carroll led all scorers with 26 points on 12-16 shooting and she brought down eight rebounds. Freshman Jasmine DePina (Providence, R.I.) led the game with 12 rebounds, and added eight points with four assists as well.

Four of the five starters for the Beavers reached double figures with senior McKenna Brodeur (Oakland, Maine) leading the way with 19 points and had nine rebounds. Fellow classmates Page Brown (Boothbay, Maine) and Tia Day (Monmouth, Maine) each scored 12 points with Brown adding six rebounds and Day bringing down eight rebounds.

Senior Alex Bassey was the last Beaver starters in double figures with 14 points and sophomore Bea Stafford (Saunderstown, R.I.) scored 10 points off the bench.

The Owls had a six-steal advantage and turned that into a 10-point advantage in points off turnovers which was key to their win.

There was little to separate the two teams during the first five minutes of the game with each having a share of the lead. Over the next three minutes the Owls went on a 10-0 run with baskets by Brown, Day and Brodeur and finished the quarter on a 14-2 run.

The Lasers battled back into the game in the second quarter, after a score by the Owls to open up the quarter, Lasell answered by going on a 15-6 run to minimize the Owl lead to three. Consecutive layups by Carroll got the game to one with two and a half minutes to go. Maine Farmington made a layup to finish off the quarter and took a three-point lead into halftime.

The Lasers kept their good second quarter going into the third scoring the first nine of thirteen points, taking their first lead since 4:40 into the first quarter. The teams stayed even for much of the quarter, staying within three points up until 2:22 left in the quarter. From that point the Owls went on an 8-2 run to give themselves an eight-point lead going into the final quarter.

There was little offense between the two sides in the final quarter, with only 16 points scored by both teams. After an early layup by the Lasers ten seconds into the game there was not another basket for four minutes when the Owls made a layup. From that point the Owls scored the next four points, giving them a 12-point edge, which ended up as the final difference as the final score went in favor of the Owls 69-57.

The Lasers will be back in action on Tuesday, November 23, when they travel to Framingham State for a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
