NEWTON, Mass. – Regis College outscored Lasell College 30-9 in the third quarter Saturday afternoon, overcoming a 32-25 halftime deficit to post a 68-49 victory over the Lasers in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at the Lasell Athletic Center.
Junior Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) led the Pride with 14 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, earning the second double-double of her career. Senior Maura Russell (Braintree, Mass.) made four three-pointers and finished with 12 points, while junior Valerie Martin (Derry, N.H.) added 11 points while pulling in six boards.
Junior Amanda Ortiz (Newton, Mass.) topped the home team with a game-high 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Graduate student Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.) was the next high-scorer with six points.
Regis scored the first six points of the game before Lasell finally broke into the scoring column four and a half minutes in on an Ortiz basket. The Lasers battled back to tie the score at 10-10 with three minutes on the first-quarter clock, and the teams were deadlocked at 11-11 after one frame.
Lasell exploded for 21 points in the second quarter, including 14 from Ortiz. The visitors were holding a 22-20 lead with 2:20 remaining, but the Lasers went on a 12-3 run to close out the half, which featured eight points from Ortiz, giving Lasell a 32-25 advantage at the break.
The Pride opened the third quarter with a 10-3 swing to tie the score at 35-all, and a 12-2 run pushed the Regis lead to 47-37. An Ortiz basket cut the margin to eight points, but Regis scored eight of the next 10 point to close out the third quarter with a 55-41 advantage. The Pride pushed their lead to 19 points in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter and Lasell got no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Lasell (5-10, 0-3 GNAC) is home again on Tuesday, hosting Rivier University in a GNAC match-up at the Athletic Center at 6:00 p.m. Regis (6-11, 2-3 GNAC) will play on Tuesday at Suffolk University in another GNAC contest.
