Lasell Women’s Basketball comes from behind to defeat UMF

NEWTON, Mass. – Lasell College outscored the University of Maine Farmington 25-11 in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon to pull out a 61-54 victory in non-conference women's basketball action at the Lasell Athletic Center.

Sophomore Peyton Young (Douglas, Mass.) scored 10 of her 13 points in the final frame, including a pair of three-pointers, while junior Amanda Ortiz (Newton, Mass.) tallied eight of her game-high 27 points in the quarter. Ortiz added seven rebounds and five steals to her 27 points on the afternoon.

Sophomore McKenna Brodeur (Oakland, Maine) led the Beavers with 15 points while grabbing seven rebounds, and senior Morgan Crocker (Boothbay, Maine) added 10 points and six boards. Senior Paige Carter (South Portland, Maine) was a strong presence with nine points and a season-high 17 rebounds.

Lasell trailed by as many as 12 points (36-28) midway through the third quarter before slicing the deficit to seven (43-36) entering the fourth. The Lasers were down eight (45-37) with eight minutes to go before going on a 14-6 run to tie the game at 51-all with just under two minutes remaining. Young and Ortiz each had six points in the surge, Young draining a pair from long range and Ortiz adding a pair of buckets and two free throws.

The hosts pulled away in the final minutes, keyed by baskets by Young and senior Liz Bougie (Sanford, Maine) and free throws by Ortiz, Bougie and graduate student Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.)

Lasell (5-7) opens the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) portion of its schedule on Tuesday, January 8, with a visit to Simmons University for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff. UMF (2-10) travels to Bates College Tuesday for a makeup game at 5:30 p.m.
