Lasell Women’s Basketball falls to Old Westbury in Tournament Finale

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Junior D'Asia Allen (Providence, R.I.) and graduate student Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.) combined for 41 points Sunday afternoon but the Lasell College women's basketball team went down to defeat to SUNY Old Westbury, 69-55, in the championship game of the 20th annual Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament hosted by Medgar Evers College.

Sophomore Micah Browne (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 18 points for Old Westbury and added six assists and four rebounds and was named tournament MVP. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by senior Charlotte Renker (Mineola, N.Y.), who led the Panthers with 20 points and 18 rebounds.

Allen poured in 22 points for Lasell to lead all scorers, making 7-of-14 field goal attempts, including 6-of-13 from long range to finish one shy of the school record for three-pointers in a game. Muir scored 19 points (on 8-of-18 shooting) and was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Lasers. Allen and Muir also led the team in scoring in Saturday's opening round with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Graduate student Imani Bumpus (Dedham, Mass.) chipped in with seven points, four rebounds and three steals in the setback for the Lasers.

Old Westbury remains undefeated on the season with a 4-0 record, while Lasell drops to 2-4.

Lasell senior Jaime Caron (Derry, N.H.) hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the first quarter to tie the score at 16-16 after one frame. Allen and Muir hit back-to-back threes to give the Lasers a one-point margin (27-26) midway through the second quarter, but Old Westbury outscored Lasell 8-0 over the final four minutes to take a 34-27 lead at intermission.

The Panthers continued their streak to start the third quarter with a nine-point run while keeping Lasell off the board for the first six minutes to open up a 43-27 advantage. It was a 53-36 margin after three quarters and the Lasers were unable to mount any kind of comeback in the final frame.

Lasell returns home to play its third game in as many days on Monday, November 26, when the Lasers host Plymouth State University at 7:30 p.m. in non-conference action at the Lasell Athletic Center.
