#6 Tufts too strong for Lasell Women’s Basketball

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The sixth-ranked Tufts University women's basketball team improved to 2-0 behind a convincing 90-30 win against Lasell College on Saturday afternoon at the Middlebury Tip-Off Classic.

The Jumbos had 12 different players score for them in a balanced offensive attack. Sophomore Emily Briggs started the game hot from the field as she scored seven points within four minutes of action. Tufts freshman guard Sofia Rosa made a bucket with one second left in the first quarter to give the Jumbos a 21-4 edge. Lasell's junior guard Amanda Ortiz (Newton, Mass.) scored all four of the Lasers points in the first.

Tufts junior guard Lilly Bolen netted the first six points of the second quarter. Ortiz came back with four unanswered points for the Lasers to cut the Jumbo lead to 21 halfway through the second quarter. Lasell got as close as 20 in the second quarter before the Jumbos ended the half with an 8-0 run. Tufts freshman Janette Wadolowski was active on the boards with five in the second quarter and hit a three pointer. Tufts went into the half with a 41-13 lead.

The Jumbos opened the second half with a 10-0 run led by junior co-captain guard Erica DeCandido who scored five points during the spurt. Tufts senior forward Katie Martensen provided a spark off the Jumbos bench on both the offensive and defensive end. Lasell graduate student Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.) led the Lasers with eight points in the third quarter. The Jumbo offense exploded for 30 points in the third quarter in which they shot 66.7% from the field to extend the lead to 71-24.

In the fourth quarter, the Jumbo defense allowed less than 10 points in a quarter for the third time in the game while scoring 19 points of their own. Tufts sophomore guard Erin Pondexter-McHan led the Jumbos with five points in the final 10 minutes.

Ortiz and Muir each scored 10 points to lead the Laser offense. Graduate student Imani Bumpus (Dedham, Mass.) grabbed a team-high five rebounds and was active on defense with two steals.

Tufts will next be in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Skidmore in a non-conference match. Lasell's next contest will be on Tuesday as well when the Lasers travel to Framingham State for a 6 p.m. start.
