Regis too strong for Lasell Women’s Basketball

NEWTON, Mass. – Junior Sam D'Angelo (Woburn, Mass.) tallied a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds Thursday evening as Regis College defeated Lasell College, 69-38, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at the Lasell Athletic Center.

D'Angelo was one of three Regis players to score in double figures as senior Shannon Hayes (Billerica, Mass.) finished with 11 points and classmate Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) chipped in with 10. The Pride won their third game in a row to improve to 11-7 overall and 9-1 in the GNAC.

Senior Morgan Church (New London, N.H.) topped the home team with 14 points, the ninth straight game and 13th time she has led the team in scoring in 15 games this season. Sophomore Dana Ross (East Haven, Conn.) and freshman Megan Sears (Westminster, Mass.) added six points apiece but Lasell dropped to 3-12 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

Lasell was within one point midway through the first quarter (9-8) but went cold, and Regis outscored the home team 14-0 over the next five minutes to take a 23-8 lead after one. The Pride had a balanced attack in the big surge as five different players scored at least two points, led by four from Stone.

It took Lasell nearly four minutes to score in the second quarter, when Church broke the drought, but Regis had built up a 29-8 bulge. The Lasers battled back to within 16 a couple times but Regis took a 20-point lead into the intermission, 37-17.

Regis extended its lead to 30 points in the third quarter as Lasell again went more than seven minutes without scoring, and the Pride cruised to the victory in the fourth quarter. Regis shot just 38 percent from the field but had a decisive 48-27 advantage on the boards.

Both teams are back on the court for conference play on Saturday (Jan. 27) at 1:00 p.m. as Lasell travels to Norwich University and Regis returns home to host Mount Ida College.
