Women's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Game to Fitchburg State 69-63
Newton, Mass. (1/31/17) – Despite a monster double-double from senior Morgan Church (New London, N.H.), the Lasell women's basketball team suffered a 69-63 non-conference deficit to the Fitchburg State Falcons on Tuesday night in the Lasell Athletic Center. The Lasers sink to 5-14 overall, while the Falcons improve to 9-10 this season.

Church led all scorers and rebounders in the effort with 22 points and 18 boards, eleven coming on the defensive end. Sophomore Becca Fenton (East Hartford, Con.) added 12 points on four made baskets from downtown, while Liz Bougie (Sanford, Me.) and Dana Ross (East Haven, Conn.) each had nine points and seven rebounds apiece.

Five players reached double figures in scoring for the Falcons, paced by Emma Thompson (York, Maine) who knocked known 5-of-7 shots from beyond the arc for 15 points. Amy Connolly (Dedham, Mass.) and Shabeli Villa (Lawrence, Mass.) each chipped in with 12, while Jaliannette Marquez (Dracut, Mass.) added 10 boards.

Led by Thompson's nine points in the first half, Fitchburg outscored the Lasers 20-11 in the second quarter to create a 40-27 halftime lead. Lasell responded with a strong 15 point third quarter, on nine points from Church, to cut lead to eight going into the final 10 minutes of play. Fitchburg stretched their lead back to 10 until Fenton drained a three from the top of the arc to cut the lead seven with 5:11 in regulation. Lasell then sliced the score by four, 62-58, with 2:51 to play when Fenton rained in another three, but the Falcons closed out on a 7-5 run to keep the lead, and final victory.

Lasell will head across Boston to face local conference foe Suffolk University on Thursday, February 2 for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off, while the Falcons return home on Saturday, February 4 for a MASCAC game against Bridgewater State at 3:00 p.m.
