Lasers Hold on for 49-47 Non-Conference Win vs. Plymouth State

NEWTON, Mass. (12/6/16) – The Lasell College women's basketball team outlasted the visiting Panthers of Plymouth State, 49-47, in non-conference action Tuesday evening in the Athletic Center. With the result, the Lasers move to 3-4 overall, while the Panthers remain at one win at 1-5 this season.

Tied 45-all with 2:17 left in regulation, freshman Dana Ross (East Haven, Conn.) sank a jumper to give Lasell its final lead for the end result.

Junior Brianna Hoffman (Milford, N.H.) led all players with a season-high 19 points off the bench – including nine points from behind the arc, and pulled down four rebounds. Ross was just shy of a double-double on nine points and ten boards with two blocked shots.

Two Panthers reached double digits in the scoring column with senior Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) leading the way via 16 points and 10 caroms for her first double-double. Seven of Wyland's rebounds came on the offensive side, contributing to the visitors' 47 total. DeAsia Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) rounded out the scoring charge for the visitors with 10 points.

With 5:17 left in the first half, Hoffman sunk a deep three to give Lasell a one-point lead over PSU, 24-23, before Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.) made a jumper to force a lead change – one of 12 overall. Ross converted on a free throw from the line to tie it up at 25, as the Lasers then scored the final four of five points for a 29-27 advantage at the break.

An early 5-0 run via sophomore Liz Bougie (Sanford, Maine) and Hoffman started the second half charge, as the Lasers seized the advantage over Plymouth State until the final four minutes of the contest. A quick 7-0 spurt from the Panthers deadlocked the game at 45, before a layup from Lawrence pulled Plymouth State within one, 48-47, with 30 seconds on the game clock.

Plymouth State used a 30-second timeout to regroup in the final moments of the game, but Lasell countered with a full timeout of its own to advance the ball in their favor. Sophomore Becca Fenton (East Hartford, Conn.) and Hoffman then sank a free throw each, as Lasell held on for the 49-47 result.

Lasell will host a non-conference contest with Emerson College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in its final contest of the semester, while the Panthers head to Salem State for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff on Thursday.
