Lasell Basketball Hosts Annual Play 4Kay Event

NEWTON, Mass. (2/14/15) – Lasell College, in conjunction with the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), hosted the annual Play 4Kay event this afternoon in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader against Anna Maria in the Lasell Athletic Center. The women's basketball teams warmed up in their pink t-shirts in an effort to raise cancer awareness and to encourage others to get involed. All proceeds during both games will go directly to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was officially founded on December 3, 2007, from the vision of the organization's namesake Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach. Coach Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. Before her death, Yow worked with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and The V Foundation to establish the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Its goal is to find an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.  Additional information on Coach Yow's story can be found at http://kayyow.com

With the creation of the Fund, Coach Yow hoped to raise money to further cutting-edge research conducted by the nation's top doctors and medical experts to allow more and more cancer patients to have access to experimental drugs and clinical trials. Since the majority of these research projects are privately funded, these researchers desperately need our support in order for them to continue to make strides in finding a cure for cancer.
