Posted: Nov 26, 2014
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
(11/25/14) - Lasell College fell to Western New England University in women's basketball action 51-44 Tuesday night at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house. The Lasers drop to 2-3 while the Golden Bears continue their winning streak at 5-1.
Sherilyn Small
led the Lasers' offensive with nine points and five boards on 4-5 shooting, while
Breanna Cashman
had eight points and seven rebounds.
Breeana Williams
also contributed with seven points and six rebounds.
Sophomore transfer
Emily Anderson
came off the bench for the Golden Bears to score a career-high 16 points to lead all players, and junior
Chelsea Vujs
recorded her second double-double in a row with 13 points and a personal-record 19 rebounds.
Save for being down 6-2 after a
Katie Stopera
three-pointer at the 14:33 mark, Western New England led for most of the evening. Anderson ignited a 9-0 run with a trey of her own and the Golden Bears suddenly led 11-6 just 2 minutes and 26 seconds later.
Stopera drained another three-pointer to tie the score at 11-all with 10:59 on the clock before WNE ended the half on a 20-6 run to lead comfortably 31-17 at the intermission. Sophomore
Kathleen Rafanelli
had a nice pass from the top of the key down low to Anderson who came off her mark and converted a layup to seemingly spark the decisive rally.
Western New England built as much as a 20-point cushion at 48-28 in the second half before the Lasers managed to cut it to six with under a minute to go.
Vujs' career night on the glass led WNE to a 58-52 rebounding edge. Anderson added eight boards and junior
Amanda Lopez
had seven
offensive
rebounds.
Western New England was able to offset a poor shooting night by having its best passing game of the season, getting 15 assists on 19 made field goals. Vujs had four helpers and freshman
Dorothy O'Neill
(6 points), three.
Western New England will have its' Commonwealth Coast Conference opener after the Thanksgiving break at Curry College in Milton on Wednesday, Dec. 3, starting at 5:30 p.m. The Lasers will lace up again on Tuesday, Dec. 2, to host Fitchburg State University at 7:00 p.m.
