Lasell Drops Newbury 74-53 in Women's Basketball Action

NEWTON, Mass. (11/21/13) – The Lasell College women's basketball team earned their second consecutive victory on Thursday night, knocking off Newbury College 74-53 in non-conference action. The Lasers improved to 2-2 on the season with the victory while Newbury fell to 0-4 for the year.

Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) led five players in double figures for Lasell with 20 points, adding six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Lasell's Alexis Chappell (Springfield, Mass.) posted her second straight double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Kayla Vincelette (Westport, Mass.) added 13 points, and Danielle Autencio (Montville, Conn.) and Breeana Williams (Bloomfield, Conn.) each chipped in 10 points and six rebounds for the Lasers.

Alex Pezzella (Rockland, Mass.) and Katie Haney (Winchendon, Mass.) each reached double figures for Newbury with 14 and 12 points respectively, and Haney finished with a team-high six rebounds. Janetis Cardona (Southbridge, Mass.) chipped in eight points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals off the bench for the Nighthawks.

The two teams started slowly in the first half, struggling to find the range and leaving the score tied at 10-10 through the opening 10 minutes of play. Breeana Williams scored eight points in a 13-6 run by the Lasers that put the hosts up 23-16 with four minutes remaining in the opening half.

A Cardona layup with 3:26 left in the half cut the Lasell lead to 23-20. Lasell closed the half by out-scoring Newbury 11-8 the rest of the way, using seven points by Stopera to offset a pair of three pointers by Newbury's Pezzella.

Lasell came out flying to open the second period, using a 16-2 run to build a 20 point lead at 50-30 with 15:38 remaining in the contest. Newbury would get no closer than 16 the rest of the way as Lasell captured the 74-53 victory.

Newbury will travel to Mount Ida College on Saturday November 23rd for a 1:00 p.m. match-up with the Mustangs, while Lasell will host Nichols College in Saturday November 23rd for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference tilt.
