Women's Basketball Improves to 2-0 with Victory over Daniel Webster

Newton, Mass. (11/17/12) - The Lasell College women's basketball team earned their second straight victory to open the season, defeating Daniel Webster 54-47 on Saturday afternoon. The win improved Lasell to 2-0 on the young season, while Daniel Webster fell to 0-2 after dropping their second close game of the year.

Nikita Soares (Westport, Mass.) scored 11 points off the bench to lead Lasell, while Kayla Vincelette (Westport, Mass.) chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. Danielle Autencio (Montville, Conn.) and Alexis Chappell (Springfield, Mass.) each finished with a team-high 7 rebounds.

Vanessa Bosques (Windham, Conn.) scored a game-high 29 points, shooting 9-22 from the floor, 5-11 from three point territory and 6-8 from the charity stripe. Bosques also finished with 8 rebounds and 3 blocks on the afternoon.

After trading baskets early, Daniel Webster opened up a 20-11 lead with 6:45 after Bosques hit her third three of the half but the Lasers hung tough behind contributions from several substitutes to close the gap. Sammy Long (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored on a driving layup, Deanna Barrett (Berlin, Conn.) knocked down a pair of free throws, and Soares tallied five straight points to draw Lasell within four points, at 24-20 at the half.

With Lasell trailing 34-31with 10:15 remaining, the Lasers went on a 10-2 run, using back-to-back three's from Soares book ended by layups from Autencio and Chappell to take a 41-36 lead.

Bosques then drilled three's on two straight possessions to put the Eagles back ahead 42-41, giving them what would be their final lead of the game.

After Chappell made a free throw to tie the game at 42, Vincelette scored four straight points to give Lasell a 46-42 lead with 2:24 remaining.

A Mollie Bartles (Torrington, Conn.) three pointer brought Daniel Webster within one at 48-47 with 1:08 left, but a Talia Gabriel (Manchester, Conn.) putback gave the Lasers a three point cushion with 34 seconds to play and the hosts put the game away at the charity stripe.

Daniel Webster travels to Rivier for their third straight road contest on Tuesday November 20th, and Lasell will return to the hardwood when they travel to Western New England on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
