Colonels Cruise to 70-45 Win Over Lasers

MILTON, MA-  JoAnna Bishop (So. Burlington, VT) scored her first season double-double against Curry College on Thursday night as the Lasell College women's basketball team fell, 70-45. Bishop scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Lasers in the non-conference tussle.

Lasell struck first when Tracy Elwell (Watertown, MA) pulled up for a jumper 26 seconds into the contest.  The Colonels retaliated for an 8-0 run through the following four minutes.  Four points by Bishop and a layup each by Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA) and Kim Archibald (Lewiston, ME) pulled Lasell back within three points (13-10) at the 12 minute mark, but 14-2 stretch by the hosts resulted in a double-figure lead with two minutes left in the half.

Curry's lead swelled to 17 before the break, which ended at 35-18.

The Lasers shot 31% in the first period of play, while the Colonels hit on 42% of their attempts.  Lasell, however, did hold a 23-18 advantage on the boards in the half, due in large part to Bishop collecting 10 caroms in the frame.

After the intermission, Curry's lead grew to as much as 27 at a number of different points of the half.  The Lasers sparked an 8-0 run at 14:15, beginning when Katie Farr (Rindge, NH) tore into the paint for a layup, but the Colonels immediately responded with an equal run of their own to re-establish the 20-point margin they would not relinquish.

Joneiha Viega (Brockton, MA) led all scorers with 22 points, adding eight rebounds and five steals.  Cortney Robinson (Brockton, MA) and Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, MA) contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the hosts while also combining for six rebounds.

For Lasell, Archibald finished with an identical nine points and nine boards, adding three blocks and two steals.  Farr tallied eight points while handing out four assists and picking up three boards, and Slattery notched seven points and chipped in with four rebounds and three assists.

Curry increased their overall record to 16-6 while the Lasers dropped to 1-21.

Lasell returns to Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, February 12th at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's College of Maine.
