Women’s Basketball Volunteers at 6th Annual Brian J. Honan 5K Road Race

On Sunday, September 20th, the Lasell College women's basketball team took part in the 6th Annual Brian J. Honan 5K Road Race, volunteering to aid in running a successful event.  The student-athletes assisted by directing people to parking lots, registering the runners, cutting fruit, handing out water, and supporting the runners and walkers along the three mile course.

Brian Honan was a teacher, an athlete, a prosecutor and a city councilor who believed in giving ordinary people the chance to live extraordinary lives.  Following his passing in 2002, the Brian J. Honan Charitable Fund was created to carry on his legacy, and the 5K followed shortly after.  All proceeds from the Brian Honan 5K benefit the Charitable Fund, as well as the scholarship funds of both the Allston and Brighton Boards of Trade.

This is the second year that the Lasers have volunteered for the charitable organization, the first time being in 2007.  Several other GNAC member institutions also participated in the race this year.  According to race Director Richard Grealish, the support continues to grow each year and he has been extremely pleased by the turnout from the community.

Among the many non-profit organizations that will benefit from the Charitable fund will be the West End House Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA, and the Boston Public Library.  Brian Honan was actively involved with each of these associations throughout his life.
