WESTCONN ON EIGHT GAME WIN STREAK, ROLLS PAST LASELL

Newton, Mass.- Western Connecticut's Heather Lee (Seymour, Conn.) led all scorers with 20 points Thursday evening as the Colonials sealed a their eighth consecutive victory with a 93-53 win over the Lasell College Lasers. 

Lasell hit nine of their first ten shots and shot 54% to hang in with WestConn through the first half.  WestConn took hold of a nine point lead at 13:33, but Lasell dug in and cut their lead to just two, at 8:31, off a put-back layup by Shauna Kelly (Quincy, Mass.).  The Lasers kept the game within reach until 4:33 when the Colonials went on a 12 point run, sparked by Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn.) on her way to 14 first half points.   WestConn run away with a 51-28 lead at the break.

The Lasers struggled to find their touch in the opening minutes of the second half.  WestConn, on the other hand, pounded the ball into Melissa Teel (Hamden, Conn.) in the post, who benefitted from a significant height advantage.  The sophomore center scored 12 points and ripped down 12 rebounds, picking up her first double-double of the year.

With Kelly facing double-team pressure from the Colonials after scoring 16 first half points, junior forward Tricia Culver (North Hampton, Mass.) stepped in to lead all scorers in the second stanza.  Culver put in 4-7 field goals and notched 5 additional freebies to tally thirteen points for the Lasers before the end of the contest.  Culver finished the game with 17 total points, four rebounds, and one block.

Four Western athletes notched double figures, Roberts, Lee, Teel, and Colleen Smith (Lebanon, Conn.) finished with 17 points and 5 boards.  Lasell's freshman center JoAnna Bishop (South Burlington, VT) battled underneath all night, also marking her spot on the scoreboard with 10 points.

The Colonials (9-2) pick up LEC play on Saturday, January 10th, at UMass Boston.  Lasell, now 3-8, head into their first GNAC contest, also on Saturday, at Albertus Magnus College.
