STANDISH, ME - The Lasers game up short in their bid to make the playoffs losing to St. Joes 63-44 on Saturday. Lasell's senior guard Katie Schumitz ‘09 (Milford, CT) scored a game-high 15 points off five three-pointers in the losing effort.
Alysn Ludwig scored the first 11 points of the game for the Lady
Monks and the hosts held a 13-10 lead with 14 minutes to go in the
half. The sharp shooting of Schumitz kept the Lasers
close, hitting 3 three's in the first half, but the Monks outscored
Lasell 15-5 in the last 7 minutes and took a 30-19 lead into
intermission.
The Lady Monks continued their run after the half outscoring the
Lasers 14-3 and pushing their lead to 44-22 with 13:08 to
play. Schumitz connected on shots from three-point distance
on back to back possessions and a basket from JoAnna Bishop
(South Burlington, VT) brought the Lasers deficit to 16
but couldn't get any closer then that. St. Joes pushed their lead
all the way to 26 points. Lasell didn't give up and ended the
game on a 7-0 run but it wasn't enough and the playoff hopes were
over with the 63-44 loss.
St. Joe's shot 43.3% from the field, while the Lasers couldn't buy
a hoop shooting 26.2%. The win secured the 8th seed in the
conference tournament for the Monks, while the loss ended the
season and the career of Schumitz and Shauna Kelly
(Quincy, MA), who had 14 points and six boards.
Schumitz grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and Katie Farr
(Rindge, NH) pitched in with 9 points and 3 assists.
