Lasers Suffers Loss at Hands of Wellesley

Lasell's women's basketball team suffered a non-conference loss on Thursday evening, at the hands of Wellesley College, 77-52.  The Lasers fall to 6-12 on the year, while Wellesley lifts to 8-6 overall.

Wellesley came out on a 6-0 run over the course of three minutes before the Lasers put together a 14-7 stretch of their own to take a one-point lead with just over 10 minutes to play.  Katie Farr (Rindge, NH) sparked the Lasers' run, completing on eight points during the comeback stint.

As the teams traded baskets over the next couple possessions, Wellesley finally pulled away scoring on 10 consecutive points, while the Lasers could not connect.  With 5 minutes to play in the period, Lasell was behind 26-16, however, the Lasers were about to close the gap once again.

A bucket down low, and a free throw by Shauna Kelly (Quincy, Mass.) followed by two key three-pointers by Katie Schumitz (Milford, Conn.) brought Lasell within one, with nine seconds on the clock.

A Last second layup plus one by Julia Thomas (Milton, Abingdon, UK) bumped the Blue's edge back to four, at 29-25, before heading into the locker rooms.

Wellesley expanded on their lead in the opening moments of the second stanza. The Lasers went down by ten before working their way back to a narrow four points off a trey by Kelsey Converse (Laconia, NH) right around the eleven minute mark.  However, the Blue put together a final push to take the lead for good over the course of the remaining ten minutes.

Farr, Schumitz, and Kelly led for the Lasers, each in double-figures.  Farr collected 14 points and 4 rebounds and Schumitz complimented that with 12 points, shooting 4 for 8 from behind the arc, also picking up four assists. Kelly led all scorers for Lasell with 15 points and 5 boards on the evening.

Lasell next hosts Suffolk University on Saturday, January 31st, in a conference matchup set to start at 2:00 p.m.
