WOMEN HOOPS DOMINATES IN HOME OPENER

Newton, Mass.- Shauna Kelly (Quincy, Mass.) dropped in twenty one points for the Lasell College women's hoops team tonight, leading the Lasers past Eastern Nazarene College, 88-56.

 

Kelly started the Lasers out by laying in the opening points of the game, then shot 6-7 from the field, while also connecting on 5-6 free throws, for 17 first half points. Tricia Culver (N. Hampton, Mass.) and Katie Schumitz (Milford, Conn.) threw in an additional eight points apiece in the half, giving Lasell a lead that they retained through the rest of the contest.  Overall, the Lasers shot 50% from the field in the first half, while the Crusaders netted only 23% of their 35 shots, leaving Lasell with a 21 point advantage at the half.

 

Lasell ran away with the game in the second half, finishing with five athletes in the double digits.  Both Schumitz and Freshman Joanna Bishop (So. Burlington, VT) ended the game just short of a double-double.   Schumitz scored 14 total points and dished out 9 assist, while Bishop had 11 points and 9 rebounds, playing in her first game on Lasell's home court.  Culver added 16 total points, 7 boards, and three steals, and freshman Kara Hinthorne (Rockland, Mass.) had 10 points at the conclusion of the contest.

 

Eastern Nazarene had two athletes finish with double-double's.  Junior point guard Christine Tucker (Antioch, CA) had a Crusaders-high 18 points, and also collecting 11 rebounds, and a game-high 5 steals, while Victoria Sontag (Mont Vernon, NH) tallied 11 point and 10 rebounds in the contest. 

 

Tonight's win marked the first for the Lasers in the 2008-2009 season.  Lasell's next game is on Saturday, November 22nd, when they host Roger Williams University, at 2:00 p.m.
