SB: Haskins leads Lasell to split of two games Thursday in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Sophomore Hailey Haskins (Franklin, N.H.) pitched a four-hit shutout over Becker College Thursday afternoon to help the Lasell College softball team gain another split of two games on its Spring Break trip to the National Training Center, blanking Becker, 5-0, after the Lasers fell to the University of Dubuque in the first game of the day, 7-1.

The Lasers move to 2-6 with the split on the day, while Becker is now 1-7 and Dubuque improves to 5-4.

Lasell winds up its 10-game trip with two more games on Friday, meeting Carroll University (Wisconsin) at 11:15 a.m. and Lakeland University (Wisconsin) at 1:30 p.m.

Game 1 – Dubuque 7, Lasell 1

Lasell managed just one run on three hits in the setback, while the Spartans scored seven runs on 12 hits. The winners scored twice in the first inning, and extended their lead to 5-0 before Lasell scored its only run in the fifth inning.

Junior Sarah Kline (Vernon, Conn.) scored for the Lasers after she singled, went to third on a double by sophomore Bethany Hector (Jaffrey, N.H.) and scored on an infield grounder by sophomore Allie Borowsky (Dalton, Mass.).

Sophomore Hannah Doherty (Hampton, N.H.) started for Lasell and pitched four innings, suffering the loss (0-2). Borowsky finished up the last two innings in relief.

Game 2 – Lasell 5, Becker 0

Haskins allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out five, evening her record at 2-2 with her third career shutout. She also helped herself at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.

Haskins put Lasell up 1-0 in the first inning when she reached on a single, went to third on two-out hits by sophomores Nicolette Genkos (Worcester, Mass.) and Hector, and scored on a wild pitch. Freshmen Brianna Gendreau (Warren, R.I.) and Lisa Pare (Ellington, Conn.) singled with two outs in the fourth inning and Haskins cleared the bases with her first home run to center field.

The Lasers added one more run in the fifth on an infield RBI single by sophomore Sarah Walton (Poland, Maine). Lasell finished with five runs on nine hits, including three by Haskins and two by Pare.
