CLERMONT, Fla. – The Lasell College softball team picked up its first victory of the season Tuesday evening with a 5-3 victory over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in the second game of the day at the National Training Center, after falling to Rutgers University-Newark in the first game, 12-0.

Sophomore Victoria Spellman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs to lead the Lasell offense in the win over MCLA. Freshman Hailey Haskins (Franklin, N.H.) went the distance in the circle for a complete-game victory (1-1), allowing just three runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out six.

After MCLA scored two runs in the top of the first inning, Lasell bounced back with one in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the second. Spellman scored in the first inning on the back end of a double steal after leading off with a double.  Sophomore Bailey Burnett (Phillipston, Mass.) delivered an RBI single in the second inning and Spellman brought another run home on an infield grounder.

The Lasers tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth inning when Spellman and Haskins singled with one out, and both later scored on infield grounders by sophomore Arianna Genovese (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and freshman Bethany Hector (Jaffrey, N.H.). MCLA put an unearned run on the board in the seventh inning, but Haskins induced three infield groundouts to close out the win for the Lasers.

Lasell managed just one hit and three walks in the five-inning affair against Rutgers-Newark. The Lasers' best threat came in the fourth inning when freshman Mady Crowley (Plymouth, Mass.) led off with a walk and freshman Alexis Truesdale (Wakefield, Mass.) followed with a single, but the next three batters were retired in order to snuff out a rally.

The Scarlet Raiders took control of the game in the first inning, putting up five runs, and ran away with it with three runs in the second inning and four in the third.

The Lasers (1-3) will continue games at the National Training Center Wednesday, facing Mount St.  Joseph at 9:00 a.m. and Coast Guard at 2:00 p.m.
