Softball Heads Home After Two Close Losses

FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/19/15) – The Lasell College softball team dropped two close games to Wisconsin-Superior and Stevens Institute of Technology with scores of 5-2 in both games this afternoon to close out their Fort Myers trip. The Lasers drop to 3-7 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets and the Ducks climb to 11-3 and 8-0, respectively.

 Wis.- Superior: 5    Lasell: 2

Junior catcher Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) steered the Lasers with a triple and an RBI, while junior pitcher Eileen Bergin batted in the second run.

Wis.-Superior saw doubles from junior Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis.) and junior Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis.), while freshman Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn.) highlighted the Yellow Jackets' win with a home run to center field.

Yellow Jackets' pitcher M. Hanson dominated the mound for seven innings, holding the Lasers to two runs on three hits. Bergin pitched a full 31-batter game, with 12 scattered hits and four runs.

After a scoreless four innings, Taipale led off with a blast over the center field fence to put the Yellow Jackets on top 1-0.  The score remained 1-0 until Wis.-Superior took the plate in the seventh to pile in four runs. A defensive mistake from Lasell scored Taipale and put sophomore Samantha Simonson (Colfax, Wis.) in scoring position, who plated first on a base hit. Freshman Nicole Weigman (White Bear Lake, Minn.) stepped up as a pinch hitter and singled to send Simonson home. Junior Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis.) used her at-bat as a sacrifice bunt to move Weigman to second base, who scored on the next play by Thomfohrda's double. Linzmeier continued the trend with another cracked double, and scored Thomfohrda to close the Yellow Jackets' offensive surge 5-0.

In their last chance at bat, the Lasers chipped away at the deficit. LeBlanc swung into the first run of the inning with a triple to send Smith home all the way from first base, who previously plated on a base hit.  LeBlanc would eventually cross home on Bergin's at-bat, but the Yellow Jackets put the game away for a 5-2 decision.

Lasell: 2         Stevens:  5

Lasell junior Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) excelled for the Lasers, sending a fly ball over the center field face for her fourth career home run.  Sophomore Emily Noll (Weymouth, Mass.) batted in the only other run for Lasell.

Ducks sophomore Emily Sellitti (Sayville, N.Y.) doubled for the Ducks, while senior Jamie DeGennaro (Pearl Rivier, N.Y.), freshmen Olivia Gemma (Fairfield, N.J.), Lauren Shirley (Oceanport, N.J.), and Corinne Loncar  (Goodyear, Ariz.) joined in for the remaining runs batted in.

Gemma captured her fourth win on the hill for the Ducks, remaining undefeated. In seven innings pitched, Gemma held the Lasers to two runs (one earned), allowed seven hits, and struck out five batters. Lasers sophomore Krystel Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) suffered her fifth loss, allowing the first three runs to score.
Both pitchers stood their ground in the first inning, before Lasell senior Denise Archetto (Cranston, R.I.) broke open the game with a bunt single. Freshman Laura MacLeod (Old Saybrook, Conn.) reached on an error advancing Archetto to second, where she scored on the next play off a single from Noll.
The Ducks took the third inning for their own, rattling off three consecutive runs. With the bases juiced, DeGennaro, Sellitti, and Gemma each worked a walk to drive in three runs to secure the 3-1 lead.
In their final chance at bat, sophomore Gina Schnecker (Doylestown, Pa.) and Sellitti put the Ducks in scoring position with a base hit and a double, respectively. Shirley singled to drive in Schnecker, and Loncar batted in Sellitti to close the game out 5-2 in favor of Stevens.

The Lasers head home after a 3-7 spring break trip, and will open up their conference schedule on March 25 when they travel to Johnson and Wales University (RI) for a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
