Softball Drops Opening Double Header in Fort Myers

Fort Myers, Fla. (3/15/15) – The Lasell College softball team opened up their 2015 season with a pair of losses to Nichols College 7-4, in eight innings, and College of Wooster 16-1, in five innings at the Cape Coral Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.   

Nichols 7, Lasell 4 – 8 innings

Sophomore shortstop Emily Noll (Weymouth, Mass.) batted 2-for-2, with a walk for the Lasers.  Junior pitcher Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) had the start and pitched 6 and 1/3 innings for the Lasers, giving up two earned runs with four strikeouts.  Bergin also went 2-for-4 with an RBI.  

Freshman pitcher Kendall Meehan (Danvers, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks.  Meehan improved to 1-1 pitching all eight innings, striking out five, and walking four batters.  

The Lasers broke open the game in the bottom of the first with crucial hits from senior Denise Archetto (Cranston, R.I.) and junior Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.).  Runs were scored by Archetto, LeBlanc, and freshman Laura MacLeod (Old Saybrook, Conn.) giving Bergin a bumper and holding off the Bison for five straight innings until they rallied a pair of runs to cut the deficit to one (3-2).  Nichols continued their offensive streak driving in two runs on the board in the top of the seventh (4-3).  Lasell then knotted the game at four, forcing an international tie-breaker where Nichols scored three runs in the top of the eighth.  Lasell was not able to score in the bottom of the eighth giving Nichols their second win of the tournament (2-4 overall).  

 

Wooster 16, Lasell 1 – 5 innings

Sophomore Erin Larghi (Wakefield, R.I.), junior Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.), and freshman Ashley Gatchell (Franklin, Mass.) had the only hits for the Lasers.  ​

Pitching duo freshman Maddy Chase (Pleasant Prairie, Wis.) and sophomore Rylee Bouillion (Chillicothe, Ohio) held off the Lasers through the five inning game.  Doubles came from senior Paige Goldberg (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.), sophomore Georgia Hill (Oakland, Cailf.), and sophomore Jenna Kendall (Marshallville, Ohio).  

Wooster jumped on top in the second, third, and fourth innings giving the Fighting Scots a 6-0 lead.  The Lasers' only run was scored by DeAngelis off of a Gatchell single that turned into a double by an error on the right fielder.  The Scots strung together a series of 10 hits to close the game in the top of the fifth.   

Lasell will play University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth at 9:00 a.m. and University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 11:00 a.m. at the Lee County Sports Complex in their second double-header of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
