Three Lasers Honored as Rookie of the Week

Newton, Mass.-Three Lasell first year athletes have been awarded Rookie of the Week honors by their respective conferences.  Concetta Nicoloro (Arlington, Mass.) was chosen as field hockey Rookie of the Week by the North Atlantic Conference, while the Great Northeast Athletic Conference selected Matthew Scully (Watertown, Conn.) as men's cross country and Mike Skelton (Conway, NH) as men's soccer Rookies of the Week.

Nicoloro was the first Laser to be honored this season by the NAC after scoring two goals against Rivier College in a conference victory over the weekend.  Lasell has won four of its last five contests, and has won two NAC matches in a row this week.  Nicoloro's second goal secured the 4-1 victory over the Raiders, bumping Lasell to an even 2-2 in the league.

So far this year, Nicoloro has completed four total goals for eight points at this midway point of the season.

This is Scully's second recognition this season as Rookie of the Week, after earning the honor during the first week of the season.  This week, Scully was chosen after finding the 26th overall spot at the Pop Crowell Invitational out of 221 runners.  He ran an outstanding time of 28:17 on the 8K course which was troubled with torrential downpours.

Scully has been the top finisher for the Lasers men's cross country team in every meet this season.  Scully's top finish this weekend helped Lasell to a 10th place finish overall in the race.

Lasell's men's soccer team was held to a tie with non-conference rival Bridgewater State College on Wednesday, but Skelton was the Laser that scored the sole goal for home team.  Skelton scored the vital mark within the first three minutes of the contest with a bullet from the top of the penalty box.  It marked Skelton's first goal of the season and earned him two points so far on the year.
