MVB: Lasell rolls past Colby-Sawyer for GNAC victory

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Lasell College men's volleyball team registered a 3-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Colby-Sawyer College Thursday evening at the Coffin Field House.

The Lasers won by scores of 25-10, 25-10, and 25-14, improving to 8-10 overall and evening its GNAC mark at 2-2. Colby-Sawyer dips to 7-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play in its first year as a member of the GNAC.

Lasell received a match-best 10 kills from sophomore Conor Leary-Watson (Bethany, Conn.). He hit .500 and added four digs and a block. Sophomore Aaron Waitekus (Norwood, Mass.) and junior Scott Sterenberg (Oceanside, N.Y.) contributed nine kills apiece. Waitekus hit a team-high .562, while Sterenberg added nine digs and a match-best four aces. Senior Andy Henriquez (Lawrence, Mass.) registered 27 assists, four kills and three aces.

The Chargers were led by a five-kill performance from freshman Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.). Classmate Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) led the team with five digs, and freshman AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) tallied 10 assists.

The Lasers tallied 14 kills on .400 hitting to cruise to a 25-10 first-set victory. Leary-Watson had four kills to lead all players.

Colby-Sawyer started the second set with a lot of energy and took a 4-2 lead. The set was then tied at 5-5, but behind strong serving from sophomore Greg Monteiro (New Bedford, Mass.), Lasell went on a 12-0 run to put the set out of reach. The Lasers hit .571 in the frame with 13 kills.

Lasell raced out to a 9-1 advantage to begin the third and force a timeout. The Chargers got a couple of points back but the Lasell attach was too much as the visitors finished the set and the match with a Waitekus kill.

The Lasers hit .442 for the match and had two solo blocks and six block assists.

The Lasers travel to Regis College on Saturday for a GNAC tri-match against the Pride and Emmanuel College. The Chargers don't return to the court until Tuesday, March 19 when they will host Emmanuel.
