MT&F: Lasers open 2020 at Reggie Poyau Invitational at Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Lasell University men's indoor track and field team opened the 2020 portion of the schedule Saturday with 11 athletes competing in the Reggie Poyau Invitational at Brandeis University. The meet included a dozen NCAA schools from Divisions II and III.

Freshman Andrew Froio (Tewksbury, Mass.) recorded the top performance for the Lasers, breaking his own school record in the shot put. He posted a mark of 12.35 meters (40'6.5") to place 10th out of 36 throwers, bettering the mark of 11.85 meters (38'10.5") set in his collegiate debut last month at Emmanuel College.

Freshman Ben Abely (Stonington, Conn.) turned in strong performances in his two sprint events. He finished the 200 meter dash in 23.84 seconds to place 10th out of 53, and he ran the 60 meter dash in 7.43 seconds to place 17th out of 49. Sophomore transfer Nick Gird (Billerica, Mass.) was right behind Abely in the 60, placing 21st in a time of 7.47 seconds.

Junior Ben Biello (North Dighton, Mass.) competed in three sprint events, placing 30th in the 60 in 7.71 seconds, 47th in the 200 in 25.97 seconds, and 26th in the 400 meters in 59.39 seconds. Sophomore James Falzone (Waltham, Mass.) placed 45th in the 60 in a season-best 7.98 seconds.

Senior Kyle Mullen (West Newbury, Mass.) and senior Matt Holden (Methuen, Mass.) represented the Lasers in the middle distance events. Mullen placed 20th in the 600 meters in 1:53.22, and Holden was 23rd in the 800 meters in 2:15.62.

Junior transfer Geralson Withrow (Mystic, Conn.) ran the 3000 meters in 10:24.54, placing 22nd; senior Kevin Wallin (Billerica, Mass.) finished the mile run in 7:08.25; and junior transfer Jordan Robertson (Warsaw, N.Y.) finished the 60 meter high hurdles in a season-best time of 10.30 seconds.

Freshman Zach Kirsch (Winsted, Conn.) competed in two field events, placing 17th in the high jump (1.60 meters/5'3") and 26th in the long jump (5.15 meters/16'10.75").

The next event for Lasell will be the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational at Harvard University on Sunday, January 19, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
