MT&F: Lasers break two school records at Emmanuel Invitational

ROXBURY, Mass. – The Lasell University men's track and field team set two school records Saturday afternoon in the first meet of the indoor season, the Emmanuel College Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center, a large non-scoring event involving more than 15 Division II and III collegiate programs.

Sophomore transfer Nick Gird (Billerica, Mass.) ran the 60 meter dash in 7.37 seconds, placing 19th among 77 entries. His time was a school record, bettering the time of 7.38 set by Ben Lane last February.

Freshman Andrew Froio (Tewksbury, Mass.) also set a school record in the shot put during his 17th place finish among 43 throwers; he posted a mark of 11.85 meters (38'10.5"), eclipsing the mark of 11.14 meters by Don Berube in 2013. Senior Alex Desharnais (Kingston, Mass.) also competed in the shot put for the Lasers, achieving a mark of 9.79 meters (31'11.5").

Gird was one of five Laser sprinters in the 60m. Freshman Ben Abely (Stonington, Conn.) was 21st in 7.42 seconds; junior Ben Biello (North Dighton, Mass.) was 43rd in 7.65; sophomore James Falzone (Waltham, Mass.) was 63rd in 8.05; and senior Massimo Cugno (Medford, Mass.) was 72nd in 8.25.

Senior transfer Malik Francis (Kingston, N.Y.) was the top Laser finisher in the 200 meter dash, placing 30th out of 72 with a time of 24.35 seconds, while Cugno was 62nd in 26.30.

Lasell was well represented in the middle distance events. Junior transfer David Jean (Malden, Mass.) placed 16th in the 400 meters in 56.64 seconds; senior Kyle Mullen (West Newbury, Mass.) was 18th in the 500 meters in 1:27.20; and senior Matt Holden (Methuen, Mass.) and sophomore transfer Joan Guzman (Nantucket, Mass.) were 18th and 28th, respectively, in the 800 meters in 2:11.49 and 2:23.13.

Junior transfer Geralson Withrow (Mystic, Conn.) ran the 3000 meters in 9:48.87, placing 27th, and junior transfer Jordan Robertson (Warsaw, N.Y.) was 18th in the 60 meter high hurdles in a time of 10.44 seconds.

Lasell's 4x400 meter relay team of Biello, Abely, freshman Zach Kirsch (Winsted, Conn.), and Robertson crossed the line in 18th place in a time of 3:57.81. Kirsch was Lasell's entry in the long jump, posting a mark of 5.15 meters (16'10.75").

The next event for Lasell will be the Reggie Poyau Inviational at Brandeis University on Saturday, January 11, 2020.
