Lasers Post Strong Performances at Corsair Classic

DARTMOUTH, MASS- On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the Lasell men's and women's track teams competed at UMASS Dartmouth in the Corsair Classic.

Opening the meet in the field events was sophomore Josh Nixon (Bloomfield, Conn.) in the long jump.  Nixon posted a New England qualifying jump with a mark of 6.56 meters, which gave him the win in the event and a new school record. Nixon later competed in the triple jump where he placed 5th overall at 11.92m.  Next up was the 1500 meter run, where sophomore Nick Garifalos (Spotswood, N.J.) took 3rd place and ran a new school record of 4:14.12.  Also in the event was sophomore Troy Gonsalves (Providence, R.I.) where he ran a 19 second personal best. Later on, Garifalos and Gonsalves would come back to run the 800, as Garifalos placed 2nd overall and Gonsalves nabbed a 3rd place finish in his heat.

In the 400 meter, freshman Kyle Vonick (Wethersfield, Conn.) ran a solid 53.50 and placed 11th overall.  In the short sprints freshman Ben Lane (Rutland, Vt.) competed in the 100 and the 200.  In the 100 Lane took 6th place overall and ran a time of 11.74.  Later he came back in the 200 where he improved to a 5th place overall finish and ran a personal best time of 23.48.  Rounding out the meet for the men was senior Jeremy Shriber (Central Valley, N.Y.) in the 5000 meter run.  He ran a personal best time of 17:14.69.

On the women's side, junior Ayumi Ranucci (Auburn, Maine) kicked things off with the 100 meter run where she posted a 14.15 second finish and grabbed 22nd place overall.  Next up was the 800 meter run which featured the trio of Melissa Cooley (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Jamie Russo (Watertown, Mass.), and Shannon Hart (Mashpee, Mass.).  Cooley led the pack by placing 2nd overall and running a solid time of 2:29.79.  Russo ran a 2:39.51 and took a 9th place finish and Hart rounded out the group just missing her outdoor personal best by four seconds.  The last event for the women was the 200 meter run.  Ayumi Ranucci would come back from her 100 and take a 29th place finish out of 60 competitors. 

Next up, the Lasers will head out to Springfield, Mass. for the AIC Invitational on Saturday, April 9.
