Lasell Men’s Soccer nips Eastern Nazarene in double overtime

NEWTON, Mass. – Senior Carter Migre (Halifax, Mass.) headed in a corner kick from sophomore Zach Ramsey (Cranston, R.I.) with 49 seconds remaining in the second overtime Thursday afternoon as the Lasell College men's soccer team edged non-conference foe Eastern Nazarene College, 4-3, at Taylor Field.

The Lasers recorded their first victory of 2018, improving to 1-1-1 overall, while the Lions, which came back from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime, remain winless at 0-5-0.

Senior Jordan Bowman (Haverhill, Mass.) put the Lasers on the board early, scoring off a rebounded save in the middle of the box just four minutes into the game. Eastern Nazarene answered back three minutes later as Anson Thibault (Durham, N.H.)  scored off a free kick on the right side of the field from 35 feet out to tie the game at 1-1.

Lasell freshman Jake Oullette (East Granby, Conn.) caught a pass from senior Connor Wall (East Hampton, Conn.) at the top of the box and buried it past the Lions goaltender to give the Lasers a 2-1 advantage in the 16th minute. Migre scored his first of his two goals of the game in the 26th minute, scoring on a penalty kick caused by an Eastern Nazarene hand-ball in the box. The Lasers held a 3-1 advantage over the Lions headed into the break.

Eastern Nazarene battled its way back into contention late in the second half, as Cyprian Okwaro (Randolph, Mass.) slipped one past Lasell defenders in the 75th minute. Sebastian Arboleda (Barranquilla, Colombia) headed in a cross from Sunil Lepcha (Charlotte, N.C) to force overtime with 1:04 remaining in the second half.

In the first overtime, both the Lasers and Lions traded scoring chances but were unable to capitalize. Eastern Nazarene had one point-blank shot saved by junior Teo Cugno (Medford, Mass.) with a second chance skimming inches above the crossbar.

Lasell and Eastern Nazarene continued to battle in the second overtime with hopes of securing a victory, with Migre ultimately securing the Lasers the victory for the Lasers.

Goaltender junior Jackson Burhans (Berlin, N.Y.) made one save for one save in 10:28 before going down with an injury. Cugno completed the final 98:48 for the Lasers, adding seven saves in the victory.

Despite the loss, the Lions narrowly outshot the Lasers 17-16, and was slightly edged 12-11 in shots on goal. Lions goaltender Florian Resch (St. Stefan, Austria) stopped eight Lasell shots in the non-conference loss.

The Lasers travel to GNAC foe Suffolk on Saturday, September 15 at 12:00 p.m. while the Lions return to action at Fitchburg State on Wednesday, September 19 at 4:00 p.m.
