Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to Albertus

NEWTON, Mass. (9/17/16) – The Lasell men's soccer team dropped an early lead to the visiting Falcons of Albertus Magnus, 2-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field.

Falcons' junior Alexis Garcia-Romero (West Haven, Conn.) broke the 1-1 stalemate in the 64th minute to lift Albertus Magnus to 4-2 this season.

The Lasers, now 0-5, put an early ball into the back of the net as senior Matteo Frazzoni (Southampton, Bermuda) beat a Falcons defender in the box seven minutes into the contest. Frazzoni tested the visitors' defense early, as an opening shot 25 seconds from kickoff pinged just wide to set the offensive pressure in the first 45.

Lasell freshman keeper Matteo Cugno (Medford, Mass.) kept the visitors at Bay with six saves in 45 minutes of no-decision soccer.

The Falcons converted on two of 19 total shots in the second half in back-to-back goals that would ultimately lead to the Lasers' downfall.  In less than a seven minute span, the Falcons fired off seven shots, six of which were stopped by freshman keeper Patrick McAvoy (Stony Point, N.Y.). Senior Alex Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) settled a deflected shot from junior Justyn Broderick (Orange, Conn.) and took the ball around a Lasell defender, past McAvoy's right shoulder for the go-ahead marker.

Overall, the Falcons outshot the home team 32-11 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

McAvoy (0-3) suffered the loss in second half relief with five saves, while sophomore Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) (4-2) took the win in the cage for the Falcons with four total stops.

Both teams will resume non-conference action on Wednesday, September 21. The Lasers will host Westfield State at 4:00 p.m., while the Falcons head to Mitchel College with kickoff slated for 3:00 p.m.
