Mustangs Come Back to Defeat Men's Soccer 2-1

NEWTON, Mass. -- For the first time since the 2011 season, the Mount Ida College men's soccer team defeated the Lasers of Lasell College by a final score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon after celebrating seniors Luke Pugsley(Milton, Mass.) and Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) on Senior Day.

After recognizing both Pugsley and Martinez in a pre game ceremony, the Lasers were able to get on the board in the opening minute of the game.

The Lasers took the lead at the 1:11 mark of the half when a Lasell free kick that was inswinging toward the Mount Ida goal mouth was headed straight up by a Mustang defender into the crossbar and came straight down into the goal behind Mustang keeper Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) for an own goal and the early 1-0 visitor lead.

Mount Ida would pressure the Lasell back line on numerous occasions throughout the first half but senior keeper Miguel Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) was able to keep the Mustang attack at bay leading into the half at 1-0.

The Mustangs came out firing in the second half as they pressured the Lasell defense with several opportunities early on in the second stanza before sophomore Christian Martins (Westbrook, Conn.) found the feet of Martinez who dazzled through the Lasers back line while beating Colmenares and equalizing for the Mustangs.

Minutes later freshman Jordain Williams (Colchester, Vt.) found a loose ball in front of the Laser goal mouth and was able to bury a shot past the outstretched Colmenares for the 2-1 Mount Ida lead.

Lasell was able to muster seven shots in the second half but Ford and the Mustang defense were able to hold off Lasell in the last thirty-three minutes of the game to hold on to the 2-1 GNAC victory.

With today's win, Mount Ida has secured the # 2 seed in next weekend's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) quarterfinal contest which will be held on Alumni Field with game time and opponent still to be determined. Lasell's fate will be determined later tonight as they await the results of games to be played later this evening.
