Madden leads Lasell Men’s Lacrosse past Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. – Junior Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass.) matched the school record with eight goals Saturday afternoon as Lasell College defeated Rivier University, 19-16, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse game at Raider Field.

Madden's eight goals ties the program record for a single game, set by Alex Zayac against Norwich University on April 29, 2006. Madden also posted his 100th career goal in the game, and now has 102 goals, 34 assists and 136 points.

Lasell evened its overall record at 6-6 while improving to 6-1 in GNAC games while Rivier is now 6-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Lasell spread the wealth, with seven different scorers for the Lasers. Senior Alex McCormack-Kuhman (Wells, Maine) and freshman Andrew Fidalgo (Wilbraham, Mass.) added two goals and four assists for six points apiece, while senior Austin Tomasetti (Elmsford, N.Y.) contributed three goals and two assists.

The Lasers jumped out to a quick three goal lead in the first quarter, with goals from Madden, McCormack-Kuhman, and Liam Gillis (Reading, Mass.) Rivier answered back with three straight goals to close out the first stanza.

The Raiders jumped in front of the Lasers 25 seconds into the second frame, and pulled ahead with a 6-4 lead midway through the quarter. The Lasers and Raiders battled back and forth before the Lasers grabbed two late goals to taked a 9-7 lead into the break.

Lasell scored the first three goals of the third quarter, and gained a 13-8 lead with 5:44 remaining in the third, the largest of the afternoon. Madden added his sixth of the afternoon off an assist from McCormack-Kuhman for the 100th of his career.

Joe Kelland (Watertown, Mass.) slipped one past the Lasers defense with two seconds remaining in the third to cut Lasell's lead to 15-11. Rivier would rattle off three straight goals to open up the fourth, but Lasell refused to relent, scoring four straight to gain a 19-14 advantage.

Sophomore Ben Werner (Boxford, Mass.) dominated the face-off x, winning 22-32 for the Lasers. Sophomore Ryan Janovic (East Lyme, Conn,) made eight saves for the Lasers between the pipes to secure the GNAC victory.

Lasell returns to action on Monday April 23, hosting crosstown rival Mount Ida in a key GNAC contest at 4:00 p.m. Rivier closes out the regular season on Wednesday April 25 at Saint Joseph's College of Maine, with face-off set for 7:00pm.
