Norwich upsets Lasell Men’s Lacrosse

NEWTON, Mass. – Junior Cody Moore (Canton, N.Y.) and senior Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) combined for 11 goals and two assists Wednesday afternoon as Norwich University defeated Lasell College, 14-11, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse game at Grellier Field.

Moore scored a game-high six goals and Jenkins added five goals and two assists as Norwich snapped Lasell's 13-game GNAC regular season unbeaten streak dating back to 2016. The Cadets improve to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the GNAC while Lasell drops to 3-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Lasell got three goals apiece from senior Alex McCormack-Kuhman (Wells, Maine) and junior Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass.) but it wasn't enough to stop the Cadets. Lasell's leading scorer, senior Austin Tomasetti (Elmsford, N.Y.), was held to just one assist.

Norwich took a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes and never relinquished the advantage. The Cadets led 4-2 after one period, and after each team scored just once in the second quarter, the visitors took a 5-3 lead into the intermission. Moore had three goals for Norwich at the break.

Moore and Jenkins scored once each to open the third quarter, extending Norwich's lead to 7-3. Lasell came alive with three consecutive goals, one each by McCormack-Kuhman, senior Matt White (Falmouth, Mass.) and junior Austin Shindoll (Denver, Colo.), but Norwich answered with goals by sophomore Kyle Maxim (Dracut, Mass.) and senior Matt Shea (Arlington, Mass.) to take a 9-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

Lasell scored three of the first four goals of the fourth, including two by Madden, to cut the margin to 10-9 with 10 minutes remaining, but this was Norwich's day as the Cadets answered with three of their own, two by Jenkins and one by Moore, to push the lead back up to four goals, 13-9. Lasell made a late charge but Norwich held on for the win.

Sophomore Brandon Milburn (Bridgewater, N.J.) made 12 saves to post the win for Norwich, while sophomore Ryan Janovic (East Lyme, Conn.) stopped nine for the Lasers in the loss.

Senior Jack Dwyer (Shelburne, Vt.) won 18-of-29 face-offs for Norwich, and classmate Michael Cashman (East Kingston, N.H.) picked up a team-high seven ground balls. Tomasetti led the Lasers with six ground balls.

Both teams play GNAC games again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as Lasell hosts Regis College and Norwich hosts Mount Ida College.
