Lasell Men’s Lacrosse defeated by Univ. of New England

BALTIMORE – Junior attackman Alex Zadworny scored a school-record eight goals Friday night as the University of New England posted a 16-9 men's lacrosse victory over Lasell College at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.

Senior Alex McCormack-Kuhman (Wells, Maine) led the Lasers with three goals, while classmate Austin Tomasetti (Elmsford, N.Y.) scored twice and junior Mike Susi (Gorham, Maine) and freshmen Andrew Fidalgo (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Colby Buccheri (Rowley, Mass.) added a goal and an assist each.

Sophomore goalie Ryan Janovic (East Lyme, Conn.) turned away 14 UNE shots in the Lasell goal. Sophomore Ben Werner (Boxford, Mass.) won 10-of-20 face-offs, and Werner and McCormack-Kunman shared team-high honors with six ground balls.

In addition to Zadworny, Garett Bozek added two goals and three assists for UNE, while Mitch Mullin and Alec Beveridge also scored twice. Matt Layton went 13-of-19 in face-offs and collected six ground balls, and Tyler Nevers posted 15 saves between the pipes.

The Nor'easters took a 3-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but Lasell settled down and stayed close the rest of the first quarter. Susi put the Lasers on the board with 11:30 remaining, and Fidalgo cut the deficit to one goal with 1:40 on the clock before UNE got one more in the final minute to take a 4-2 lead after one.

The second quarter belonged to the Nor'easters as they outscored the Lasers 7-0, including four by Zadworny, to take an 11-2 advantage by halftime. Lasell outscored UNE 3-2 in the third quarter and 4-3 in the fourth, but it was not enough to overtime the first-half deficit.

Lasell (0-4) returns home to prepare for its home opener on Wednesday, March 21, against Wentworth. UNE (4-1) visits Bowdoin College on Tuesday, March 20, at 4:00 p.m.
