Lasell Men’s Lacrosse drops opener at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Lasell College men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener on the road Wednesday afternoon at Roger Williams University, 10-8, in non-conference action at Bayside Field.

The game was tied 5-5 at halftime but the Hawks outscored the Lasers 5-2 in the third quarter, and Lasell managed just one goal in the fourth quarter in a comeback attempt.

Juniors Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass.), Austin Shindoll (Denver, Colo.) and Mike Susi (Gorham, Maine) each contributed two goals in the loss for the Lasers.

Roger Williams quickly got on the board two minutes into the game. The Hawks would gather a 3-0 lead with 6:27 remaining in the first quarter, as Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) scored his second of three goals on the afternoon.

Madden would answer the call for Lasell with 1:47 remaining in the first, capitalizing on an extra-man opportunity to put the Lasers on the board.

The Lasers and Hawks traded goals in the second quarter, with Lasell coming back to tie the game at 4-4 on consecutive goals by Madden and senior Alex McCormack-Kuhman (Wells, Maine) with two minutes to go in the half. Junior David Sheehan (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored his first career goal for Lasell to tie the game 5-5 heading into the half.

Susi would give the Lasers their first and only lead of the night with 10:54 remaining in the third, connecting on a pass in-front of the crease from freshman Andrew Fidalgo (Wilbraham, Mass.) for a 6-5 advantage. The Hawks answered by rattling off three straight goals in less than four minutes, including Grier's third to take an 8-6 lead. Shindoll scored for Lasell to cut the margin to 8-7, but RWU got two more goals to close out the third period with a 10-7 advantage.

Susi notched his second of the day a minute into the fourth quarter to make it 10-8, but that ended up being the final score.

Sophomore Ryan Janovic (East Lyme, Conn.) made 11 saves in his first career start for Lasell. Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) also contributed 11 saves for the Hawks in the victory.

Roger Williams conquered the face-off x, winning 15-of-22. Freshman Tyler Harvey (Tewksbury, Mass.) went 3-6 in his collegiate debut for the Lasers.

Lasell and Roger Williams are both back in action on Saturday, March 3, at 1:00 p.m. as the Lasers travel Western New England while the Hawks host Trinity.
