Men's Lacrosse Downs Norwich 14-8 in Conference Opener

NORTHFIELD, VT (4/4/17) – The Lasell College men's lacrosse team used seven goals in the third quarter to down the Norwich University Cadets 14-8 in its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener on Tuesday evening at Sabine Field. With their fourth straight victory, the Lasers improve to 4-2 on the season, and 1-0 in GNAC play, while Norwich drops to 4-6 and 1-1 in the conference.

Junior Alex McCormack-Kuhman (Wells, Maine) led the Lasers with five goals, and tied up the game twice in the first half, scoring the lone Lasell goal in the first period, and the equalizer at 2-2 in the second.

Cadets Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) and Jimmy Warden (North Andover, Mass) both added goals for Norwich to give the Cadets a 4-2 lead 8:09 remaining in the second, before Hilmar Smith (Portland, Maine) gave the Lasers an added boost with 34.6 seconds remaining in first half.

Lasell came firing out of the gates in the third, unleashing seven goals against the Cadets, who only tacked on two. McCormack-Kuhman and Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass.) scored within 31 seconds of each other, taking a 7-4 lead with 12:05 remaining in the third.

Senior Josh Gallant (Hampstead, N.Y.) capped off the high scoring third quarter with his first goal of the season off a Saitta assist with 3.2 second remaining. Madden scored twice in the fourth to complete the hat-trick for the Lasers, squashing any potential comeback effort for the Cadets.

Jorge Salazar (Waltham, Mass.) added to his strong senior campaign with 14 saves for the Lasers, while Norwich's Tyler LoPorto (Weston, Fla.) saved 10 for the Cadets.

Connor Johnson (Hampstead, N.H.) led the team with eight ground balls despite the Lasers being edged out 36-26. Norwich dominated the X 17 for 25 on the afternoon, as Jack Dwyer (Shelburne, Vt.) went 16-24 on face-offs.

Lasell travels to GNAC rival Mount Ida on Thursday April 6, 2017 at 2:00pm for a rescheduled showdown that was originally set for April 1, while Norwich travels to GNAC foe Saint Joseph's Maine on Saturday April 8, 2017 at 3:30pm.
