NEWTON, MA (3/26/17) -- The Lasell men's lacrosse team saw seven different players scored en route to a 12-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine at Grellier Field Sunday afternoon. With their third straight win, the Lasers move above .500 for the first time this season, improving to 3-2, while Southern Maine falls to 2-3.
The non-conference event was held in honor of the White Ribbon Campaign, a movement the Lasell men's lacrosse team initiated at the beginning of this week. Members of the team have worked tirelessly with the Lasell community, receiving pledges from teammates, coaches, fans, and the student body in an effort to stop domestic and sexual violence. Austin Shindoll (Denver, Colorado) got the Lasers on the board first, scoring his first of two goals with 7:26 remaining in the first quarter. Alex McCormack-Kuhman (Wells, Maine) added a man-up goal to give Lasell a 2-0 lead after the first.
Southern Maine got on the board just 3:01 into the third, as Jake Schoenburg found the back of the net for the Huskies, his first of two goals on the afternoon. Junior Austin Tomasetti (Elmsford, New York) capped off the third quarter giving the Lasers a 7-1 lead as time expired.
Senior Chase Swift (Branford, Conn.) jump-started the offense going 9-12 from the face-off X, as Pete Dolan (Pearl River, New York) went 2-2. Drew Shane was the only Husky to win a face-off, finishing the game going 4-10.
In the fourth, Lasell rattled off five goals, including four unanswered after Schoenburg cut the lead to 12-2 with 7:19 remaining in the fourth.
Connor Johnson (Hampstead, New Hampshire) led Lasell with three goals and one assist on the afternoon. Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass), McCormack-Kuhman, and Shindoll all finished the game with two goals apiece.
Defensively, Jorge Salazar (Waltham, Mass) stood tall in net with 12 saves for the Lasers, while Southern Maine's Zach Bessette had 16 stops for the Huskies.
Lasell controlled the game in multiple categories, including a 38-18 advantage on ground balls, led by Johnson and Tomasetti, who had seven and six respectively. On shots, the Lasers outshot the Huskies 46-26.
The Lasers travel to GNAC rival Mount Ida on Saturday April 1, 2017 at 1:00 p.m., while the Huskies return to play on Tuesday, March 28 at 4:00 p.m. against GNAC foe Saint Joseph's Maine.
