Men's Lacrosse Falls to Roger Williams 13-5 in Season Debut

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Lasell College men's lacrosse team suffered a 13-5 loss at Roger Williams University on Thursday afternoon in the 2016 season opener.

The first quarter was all Hawks, as RWU came out with five unanswered goals in the opening period. Nick Gagnon (Milton, Mass.) began the contest with back-to-back scores in the first two minutes of play. With just under eight minutes to play in the quarter, Doug Brown (New York, N.Y.) and Dan Arket (Poughquag, N.Y.) each logged a goal within a minute for a 4-0 Hawk lead. Max Cammarota (Redding, Conn.) tallied the final score of the period off on assist from Gagnon.

Eddie Hill (Somers, Conn.) notched his first score of the year four minutes into the second quarter. It would not be until the 5:11 mark of the second quarter before Lasell managed to get on the board. Goalkeeper Chris Thomas-Ikier (Burlington, Mass.) picked up a ground ball and charged his way down the field, passing to a streaking Pat Egan (Glen Rock, N.J.) who gave Lasell its first score.

Roger Williams closed out the half with a goal by Emmett Little (Portsmouth, R.I.) in the final minute of the quarter to take a 7-1 lead into halftime. However, similar to RWU's previous game, the Hawks failed to score in the third quarter, despite controlling the ball for a majority of the period.

Conversely, the Lasers managed to climb back into the game with three goals in the period. Egan, Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass.), and William Towner (Amherst, N.H.) each scored in the third to pull within three (4-7) entering the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the Hawks found their offensive stroke back. RWU would go on to score six unanswered goals halfway through the period over a three-minute stretch, culminating in a 13-4 advantage with just under six minutes left. Madden scored the final goal of the game for the Lasers, but RWU would go on to take the eight-goal win.

Gagnon finished with five points on two goals and three assists, while Brown (4 G) and Hill (2 G, 2 A) each scored four points. Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) earned his first win, making five saves in the first half before being relieved by Connor Carroll (Madison, Conn.) who stopped four shots.

Egan and Madden both scored two goals for Lasell, with Towner adding the fifth tally. Thomas-Ikier made six saves in the loss.

Both teams return to non-conference action on Wednesday, March 9. The Lasers will welcome Plymouth State University to Grellier Field for a 3:30 p.m. game start, while Roger Williams (1-1) travels to Wesleyan.
