Saints Stop Lasers 14-7 in GNAC Battle

BOSTON, Mass. - Emmanuel College defeated Lasell College 14-7 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Tuesday evening at Roberto Clemente Field. The Lasers drop to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in GNAC play, while the Saints improve to 4-4 on the year and move to 2-0 in the GNAC.

The Saints jumped out to an early 2-0 lead following scores by freshman Jared Lucas (Gilford, N.H.) and sophomore Tony Cibelli (Westboro, Mass.) before Lasell got on the board with a Casey Sullivan (Quaker Hill, Conn.) marker with 4:07 remaining in the quarter to make it a 2-1 contest.

EC junior Michael Donovan (Assonet, Mass.) made it 3-1 with his fifth goal of the year with 1:14 to play in the first before junior middie Chris Curtis (Ashland, Mass.) found the scoring column in the clutch, converting an unassisted score with just six seconds to play in the opening quarter to bump the Saints lead to 4-1.

The Lasers didn't let the late score get to them as junior attack Andrew Suh (Colchester, Conn.) made it a 4-2 game with his team-leading 11th tally of the year just 58 seconds into the second quarter.  Emmanuel responded less than a minute later as junior Michael Rogers (New Haven, Conn.) increased the lead to 5-2 with his eighth goal of the campaign.

With the score locked in at 5-2 for most of the second quarter, the Lasers had several chances to cut into the deficit but were plagued by turnovers and failed clear attempts and it caught up to them right at the close of the half. A two-minute locked in penalty account for man-up goals by Curtis to end the half and Cibelli to open the third quarter, making it a 7-2 game.

The Saints continued to build the lead as Cibelli, freshman middie Charlie Moran (Maitland, Fla.), freshman attack Tyler Billick (Agawam, Mass.) and junior middie Justin Kelly (Collegeville, Pa.) added third quarter goals to make it 11-2 with just under seven minutes to play in the third.

Sullivan stopped the bleeding for the Lasers with his second goal of the evening, making it 11-3 with 3:24 to play in third but another late quarter goal by Curtis, this time with just five tics left in the frame, gave EC the commanding 12-3 lead heading into the final quarter.

Lasell made a little noise in the fourth, outscoring the Saints 4-2 on goals from junior Pat Egan (Glen Rock, N.J.), senior Joe Cunning (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Josh Gallant (Hampstead, N.H.) and Suh but it wasn't enough as the Saints held on for the 14-7 victory to improve to 2-0 in league play.

EC senior goalie Austin Lauzier (Bedford, N.H.) made eight saves in the win while Lasell junior David Walen (Longmeadow, Mass.) made 10 saves.

Both teams return to GNAC action on Saturday, March 28 at 1:00 p.m. The Lasers welcome Albertus Magnus College at home, while the Saints travel to Norwich University.
