Roger Williams Takes Down Men's Lacrosse 16-7

NEWTON, Mass. (3/6/2015) – The Lasell College men's lacrosse team fell to Roger Williams University 16-7 in non-conference action on Friday afternoon at Grellier Field.

The Lasers were paced by senior midfielder Dylan Fernandes (Billerica, Mass.) with a pair of goals and an assist. Senior midfielders Aaron LaPorte (Gorham, Maine), Joe Cunning (Newton, Mass.) and junior attack Andrew Suh (Colchester, Conn.), senior Robbie Palazzo (Redding, Conn.) and Casey Sullivan (Quaker Hill, Conn.) each potted a single goal for Lasell. Suh handed out a pair of assists to go along his goal this afternoon.

Defensively, freshman midfielder Brendan Dwyer (Northport, N.Y.) scooped up a team-high six ground balls, while sophomore midfielder Connor Johnson (Hampstead, N.H) picked up four ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers for the Lasers.

Roger Williams received a pair of hat tricks from senior attack Cameron Signorelli (Albany, N.Y.) and freshman middy Eddie Hill (Somers, Conn.). Freshman midfielder Jon Gomer (Duxbury, Mass.) netted two goals for the Hawks alongside single goals via junior attackmen Will Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.), Doug Brown (New York, N.Y.) and Tim Kelly (Redding, Conn.). Sophomore midfielders Stephen Assumma (South Salem, N.Y), Anthony Gallo (Bridgewater, Mass.), Michael Pratt (Forestdale, Mass.), senior defenseman Mark Fesesmeyer (Norwalk, Conn.) and junior midfielder Nick Gagnon (Milton, Mass.) also tallied a single goal for the visitors.

Defensively, the Hawks gathered a season-high 49 ground balls highlighted by a game-high 10 ground balls from Gomer.

Roger Williams opened the scoring with four straight goals with the first of the bunch coming just 2:54 into the match. Gomer found the back of the net for the Hawks on a feed from Kelly to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage. The Lasers got on the board with 6:19 left in the first quarter when Fernandes received the ball from sophomore Anthony Saitta (Derry, N.H.) and put it over the goalkeeper's shoulder to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Hawks.

The Hawks added to their goal total to make the score 5-1 after Brown registered his first of the game on a feed from Gagnon at the 9:21 mark. Both teams traded goals to close the half, each scoring a pair, highlighted by Fernandes' second goal of the game and Palazzo's marker on the man-up advantage with 57 seconds left in the half. Roger Williams tallied another goal with just five seconds to play in the half to up its advantage to 8-3 heading into the break.

Roger Williams extended its lead with five goals in the third quarter, but Lasell didn't let down. Sullivan netted his first goal of the season on the extra man opportunity at the 13:12 mark (13-5) to open scoring in the fourth. The Lasers added back-to-back goals, coming from Suh and Cunning, (15-7) but it wasn't enough as Roger Williams claimed the match 16-7.

Junior goalkeeper David Walen (Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded 22 saves for the Lasers on the afternoon, while senior goalie Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) made nine saves to improve to 2-1 on the season for the Hawks.

Lasell went 17-for-28 in clears and 13-for-26 from the faceoff circle, while Roger Williams was 24-for-28 in clearing attempts and held a 49-30 advantage in ground balls picked up.

Lasell (0-1) hosts UMaine-Farmington on Sunday, March 8 at 12:00 p.m. in non-conference action, while Roger Williams (2-1) travels to Bates College for an out-of-league matchup on Wednesday, March 11 at 4:30 p.m.
