Lasers Claim first GNAC win of the Season

Newton, Mass (3/26/13) – The Lasell's men lacrosse program claimed their first Great Northeast Conference victory with a 16-2 performance against Daniel Webster College. The win for the Lasers brings their overall record to 2-4, while Daniel Webster slips to 1-3 on the year and 0-3 in conference play.

 The Lasers were lead by efficient shooting from Andy Puopolo (Groton, Mass.) who had a career-high six goals and two helpers. Senior midfielder, Ladson Shaello-Johnson (Binghamton, N.Y.) also had a game-high with nine groundballs and while 14 for 19 from the faceoff dot. In total, eight Lasell players registered goals in the contest.

Daniel Webster was led by Sean Steadman (Woburn, Mass.) who claimed five groundballs for his team, while Sean Hamilton (Brookline, N.H.) and Andrew Leon (Leominster, Mass.) each scored for DWC. Although he recorded a loss, goalkeeper Tommy Driscoll (South Boston, Mass.) was impressive as he stopped 24 shots finishing with a save percentage of .600.

The first quarter saw quite a bit of back forth action for the most part, but Lasell appeared to be a little sharper and would establish a 3-0 lead to end the first 15 minutes of play. The first Lasers goal came at 10:14 from Puopolo assisted by Robbie Palazzo (Redding, Conn.). James Finn (Quincy, Mass.) from Casey Sullivan (Waterford, Conn.) at the 8:29-mark would make it 2-0 for the Lasers. The Lasers increased their led to three as Puopolo scored again, with 5:45 to go in the quarter.

The rest of the contest saw the Lasers attack taking control of the game as they scored 11 goals in the middle two stanzas. Sean Hamilton scored for the Eagles with 36 seconds remaining in the third quarter to make it 14-1.

The closing quarter saw a goal from DWC sophomore, Andrew Leon to make it 14-2 with 10:40 to go. After some back and forth play, Lasell would strike twice before the final whistle as Mike Dupont and Mike Bomberg would make it 16-2.

Lasell freshman David Walen (Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded the win stopping all five shots he faced.

Both teams will resume action on Thursday, March 28. The Eagles will travel to Regis for a non-conference contest, while the Lasers will continue GNAC play as Rivier makes a trip to Grellier Field, both games are scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
