Western Connecticut Tops Lasell in Men’s Lacrosse

Newton, Mass. (3/23/13) – The Lasell College men's lacrosse team fell in a non-conference game against the Colonials of Western Connecticut State, 13-8. Lasell dropped to 1-4 on the year, while the Colonials climbed to 5-3 overall.

Sophomore Robbie Palazzo (Redding, Conn.) scored three goals for Lasell and classmate Dylan Fernandes (Billerica, Mass.) added a pair of scores for the Lasers. Fellow second-year Andy Puopolo (Duxbury, Mass.) scored once and handed out three assists, senior Dan Clark (Scarborough, Maine) added a goal and two assists and sophomore Aaron LaPorte (Gorham, Maine) chipped in a goal and an assist on the afternoon.

Andrew Bascom (Franklin, Mass.) led the attack for the Colonials finishing with four goals on the afternoon. Andrew Nejame (Danbury, Conn.) added two goals and two assists for WCSU, Spencer Penoro (Orange, Conn.) chipped in two goals and an assist, and Nick Foley (Walpole, Mass.) and John Foristall (Danbury, Conn.) each netted a pair of goals in the victory.

Western Connecticut opened the game scoring the first three goals, going on top 3-0 when Penoro finished a feed from Anthony Nejame with 4:23 left in the first quarter. Dylan Fernandes got the hosts on the board with an unassisted effort and Andy Puopolo added a man-up goal with 1:23 on the clock to cut the deficit to 3-2. Lasell drew even with six and a half minutes remaining in the second quarter when Puopolo found Robbie Palazzo in front of the cage on a man-up opportunity. The Colonials closed the half on a 3-1 run to take a 6-4 lead into the intermission.

Andrew Bascom put WCSU ahead 7-4 early in the third quarter, but Lasell responded when Palazzo and Puopolo hooked up again with 7:39 remaining in the period to bring Lasell back within two at 7-5. After Nick Foley pushed WCSU back ahead by three, Palazzo kept Lasell within reach with his third goal with 13:36 remaining in the game. The Colonials strung together five straight goals over a nine and a half minute stretch to pull away and lead 13-6 with 3:22 left in the fourth. Lasell got a pair of late goals to make the final score 13-8.

David Walen (Longmeadow, Mass.) made 20 saves on the afternoon while taking the loss in goal for Lasell while Kevin Seery (East Lyme, Conn.) earned the win in net for WCSU stopping 13 shots in the contest.

Western Connecticut will be off until Saturday Mar. 30th when they host UMass-Dartmouth at 3:00 p.m. and Lasell will host Daniel Webster on Tuesday Mar. 26th at 3:30 p.m.
