MEDFORD, MA – The Lasell College men’s lacrosse team fell to ninth-ranked Tufts University on Tuesday afternoon, 20-4, at Bello Field.
Tufts scored the first six goals of the game, dominating the scoring column through the 14th minute of the first quarter. Lasell’s junior midfielder Sam Wilcox (Norfolk, MA) netted an unassisted goal while man-up with one minute left in the period to break the Jumbo’s 6-0 streak. Fifty seconds later, Tuft’s Sean Kirwan (Boonton Township, NJ) responded with a man-advantage goal for the hosts, bringing the score to 7-1 at the end of the first stanza.
Sean Speciale (Hillsborough, NJ) and Wilcox each used an extra-man possession to the Lasers’ advantage in the second quarter, with Chris Bulkley (Groton, CT) earning the assist on Speciale’s goal. However, Tufts continued to extend their lead, scoring five times in the period, including back-to-back goals by Brian Donovan (St. James, NY) between the seventh and eighth minute. Lasell lagged by nine points, 12-3, at the half.
The third quarter belonged entirely to the Jumbo’s, who began scoring one minute in when Kirwan knocked down their 13th goal. Ryan Molloy (Setaucket, NY) swiped in two in a row, at 13:45 and 11:07, and Geordi Shafe (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) finished the period with Tuft’s 19th tally with 41 ticks left on the clock.
The Jumbos would record one more goal in the final period, as would Lasell’s Dylan Gray (Bayport, NY) with 7:33 remaining to play. Gray’s goal was his first of his collegiate career and would finish the days scoring at 20-4.
Junior Eric Walsh (Weymouth, MA) started in goal for Lasell (1-3), making nine saves in the first half. Freshman Tyler Silliman (Windsor, CT) and junior Mike Kelliher (Weymouth, MA) also played, making three stops between them. Sophomore Adam Foss (Billerica, MA) won seven face-offs and finished with three ground balls for the Lasers. Junior Nick Sampson (Londonderry, NH) led the visitors with four ground balls.
The Lasers return to action on Saturday, March 20th, for a 1:00 p.m. game against non-conference foes Hamilton College (1-0) on Grellier Field.
