Men's Lacrosse Topped by Babson in Pilgrim League Opener

NEWTON, MA-- In the shared Pilgrim Lacrosse League season opener between the Babson College Beavers and the Lasell College Lasers, the Beaver came out on top, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon on Grellier Field.  Babson continues on a four game win streak, improving their record to 5-4 (1-0 Pilgrim), while Lasell dropped their fifth game in a row, falling to 1-7 overall (0-1 Pilgrim). 

Babson scored five straight goals in the first quarter before Lasell got on the board.  Armand Wilson (Fairfield, CT) scored 1:36 into the opening period for the Beavers, and was followed by Christian Ebert (Boxford, MA) and Kevin Sayet (Miami, FL) over the course of the next five minutes.  Paul Grip (Shrewsbury, MA) tallied his first of three goals at 6:11 and Andrew Packer (Hudson, OH) completed the 5-0 run, scoring man-up with 1:40 remaining in the period. 

Lasell’s Jon Elia (East Lyme, CT) broke up the Lasers’ scoreless stretch with a goal with 1:21 left in the first frame.

Both teams were even, scoring two additional goals each in the second quarter. The score was 7-3, Babson’s advantage, at the half.

Grip scored his third goal to begin the second half, two minutes into the third quarter.  Brian Yepez (Hillsborough, NJ) attacked twice for Lasell in the period, scoring at the 10 and six minute mark.  Babson’s Jon Standen (South Hadley, MA) interrupted Yepez’s marks with a goal of his own, at 7:38.

 

The Lasers scored twice in the final quarter, while the Beavers returned with just one goal, but the damage was previously set. The Beavers triumphed, 10-7, at the final horn.

 

Babson outshot Lasell 30-22 over the course of the game, however, Lasell held the advantage in face-offs (14-19) and ground balls (44-35).  Lasell benefited from just one of eight extra-man opportunities in the game, where as Babson went 1-for-3.

 

Lasell’s junior goalkeeper Eric Walsh (Weymouth, MA) made 12 stops in the defeat.  For Babson, Mike Saucier (Nashua, NH) turned away 11 shots in the Beavers cage.

 

Lasell will face off against Pilgrim League rivals Springfield College on Wednesday, April 7th at Springfield. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
