Men’s Lacrosse Topples UMASS Boston

Newton, Mass.-  The Lasell College men's lacrosse team took a convincing 16-5 win over the Beacons of University of Massachusetts, Boston on Saturday afternoon on Grellier Field.   The Lasers won every statistical battle except for total shots, which they tied in with the beacons, at 34 total apeice. UMass slips to 0-1 this season and the Lasers improve to 1-2.

Alex Engels (Weston, VT) scored with the game just a minute and a half old after causing Boston's Peter Kovach (Cohasset, Mass.) to make a turnover, scooping up the groundball, and transitioning down field to give Lasell the opening points.

Lasell added to their 1st quarter advantage as senior midfielder Ryan Koerner (Floral Park, NY) fired a cross-crease pass to Mike Maggio (Winchester, Mass.) to go up 2-0, with under a minute left in the period.

In the second, Lasell padded the lead with two quick goals in just over a minute.  Adam Foss (Billerica, Mass.) cranked an extra-man goal at 14:03, and Jon Elia (East Lyme, Conn.) scored just 13 seconds later after a face-off won by Foss.

Boston's first goal was scored at 9:08 in the second by Kovach, but the Lasers outscored the Beacons 3-1 in the remaining minutes left before the break, finishing the half with a 7-2 edge.

Kovach struck again in the third, unassisted, followed by five Laser tallies to put the game completely away.  Additional Beacon goals by John Canty (Milton, Mass.) and Dale Nunn (Hillsborough, NJ) in the last 2 minutes of the stanza were answered fast by Lasell's Keith Berliner (Oakland, NJ) while the Lasers were man-down, and Chris Bulkley (Groton, Conn.), who closed the quarter with an additional connection.

The final fifteen belonged entirely to the Lasers who cushioned their advantage with goals by Koerner and Zach Wielgoszinski (Amherst, NH) ending the contest 16-5.

The Lasers scored on 6 of 10 extra-man opportunities, while the Beacons only capitalized once on seven chances.  The Lasers also took 17-24 face-offs, with Foss dominating on 14 of 18, and adding 9 ground balls.

Lasell's keeper Mike Kelliher (Weymouth, Mass.) earned the win today, picking up 15 saves throughout the contest.  Maggio and Bulkley each tallied four points on three goals and an assist, but Brandon Keith (Marston Mills, Mass.) recorded a game-best five points, assisting four goals and adding one of his own.

Lasell returns to action on Tuesday, March 17th when they travel to Trinity for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match.
