Maggio, Stambler, and Keith Take All-Conference Accolades

Newton, Mass.- Three Lasell men's lacrosse players have been selected to the Pilgrim League All-Conference teams for the 2009 season. Mike Maggio (Winchester, Mass.) and Matthew Stambler (Bay Shore, NY) were honored on the first team, while Brandon Keith (Marston Mills, Mass.) was selected to the second team.

 

For the third season in a row, Maggio has made his place on the Pilgrim League All-Conference team.  In 2007, Maggio was a second team recipient as a sophomore, and in 2008 he was a first team honoree. This season, with 27 goals and 17 assists, Maggio earned a spot on the first team once again as a top midfielder in the conference.

 

Maggio completed his senior year with 44 total points, including a sudden death overtime, game winning goal in the Lasers final game of the season against Clark University.  Maggio also holds the men's lacrosse record for most game-winning goals (5) in a career here at Lasell.

 

Maggio was tied for first on the team in assists this season, and was second in both goals and total points.  He added 28 groundballs, playing in all fifteen contests. In addition this season, Maggio recorded the individual game-high in points (7), goals (5), and assists (4) for Lasell.  Against Plymouth State he had seven points, including four assists, and against Massachusetts Maritime Academy he also notched seven points, with five of those being goals. 

Maggio was also ranked 9th in the Pilgrim League in goals per game, 4th in assists per game, and 8th in points per game during the 2009 season.

Over the course of his career, Maggio has accumulated 95 goals, 40 assists and 135 total points, placing him at 6th in the all time records for goals, tied for 8th in total assists, and 7th overall in points.


Stambler also repeats on the Pilgrim League All-Conference first team this season, proving to once again be one of the best defenders in the league.  In nine games this season, Stambler collected 36 groundballs, averaging 4.0 per game. Stambler collected a game-best eight ground balls against Norwich University this season, and also picked up seven at Connecticut College.

 

Also a co-captain for the Lasers in 2009, Stambler finished his career as a Laser with 191 groundballs, setting the record for most career groundballs in the men's lacrosse history.  In addition, he holds the record for most caused turnovers in a game (5) and in a career (20).  Stambler also completes his career with 9 points, scoring five goals and pitching in with four assists.

 

A first time recipient of All-Conference honors, Keith was recognized to the second team after an impressive season scoring 28 goals, adding 17 assists, for a team-best 45 season points. 

 

The junior attack led the team in goals and tied with Maggio for assists this season. Keith also tied for the individual game-high this season in assists, dishing out four against UMass Boston.  His game-best in goals in a game was four, which he tallied on four occasions this year, and his game-best in total points this season was six, occurring against MIT in an 11-10 victory during which he scored the game winning goal in overtime. Keith was recognized as Player of the Week in the Pilgrim League after the MIT contest and is also ranked in the Pilgrim League, tied with Maggio at 4th for assists per game and finished at 6th for points per game. 

 

Keith is also tied for all-time game winning goals in the Lasell men's lacrosse records at five.  He has 55 career goals, 29 career assists, for a grand total of 84 points to date.

In addition, three athletes, Matt Stambler, Anthony Erz (Hampton, NJ), and Chris Bulkley (Groton, Conn.), were also named to the Pilgrim League All-Academic Team for the 2009 season.  In order to make the team, a student athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and be a significant contributor to his team.

The Lasers finished the 2009 season with a 5-10 record and at 6th place overall in the Pilgrim League.
