MBB: EJ Day Sets School Record in Lasers Victory

Newton, MA - The Lasell Lasers picked up their first conference win of the season on Saturday, as they defeated the Saint Joseph's (ME) Monks by a score of 90-69. The win improves the Lasers to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Monks are also now 4-5 and 1-1.

Early in the game it was clear that something special was happening, as EJ Day assisted on four of the first five made baskets by the Lasers, giving Lasell an early 11-10 lead. It was just a precursor of what was to come. The Lasers would later use a 10-2 run to take an even bigger lead. The two teams would be tied at 35 with just under three minutes to play in the first half. The Lasers would go on an 11-0 run to end the half, with Day assisting on each of the five made baskets during the run. In addition to his 15 points, Day added 12 assists, giving him a double-double in the first half. The Lasers led 46-35 at the break, with Day having scored or assisted on 40 of those points.

It was more of the EJ Day show in the second half, as he controlled the game. With just under 12 minutes remaining in the game, Day passed the ball to Aidan Morin, who made the layup, giving Day his 14th assist of the game, breaking the previous school record of 13. That record had been held by Dwayne Powell and Jeremy Daniel who had their 13 assist games in 2007 and 2014 respectively. The Lasers were never in any danger, as they built their lead up to as many as 21 in the second half.

Day would finish with 18 assists, shattering the previous school record. He also scored 36 points, and grabbed five rebounds, and four steals. Overall, he scored or assisted on 75 of the Lasers 90 points. There were four other double-digit scorers for Lasell with Conan McCusker and Quinton Partee Jr. each scoring 11, and Marcus Lewis and Aidan Morin each scoring 10. As a team, the Lasers shot 60% from the field.

Up Next - The Lasers will next play in the new year, as they will host Elms on Saturday, January 3rd at 7:30pm.
